Pvl ignition
« on: May 29, 2013, 05:22:20 pm »
Fleabay has this pvl ignition system. No lighting coils to fail.  The low reciprocating weight has to help let it rev quickly for sure but what other benefits can this provide?

i cant seem to get them to run right. maybe its just me. they have built in curves so you have to time the ignition for what you are tuning for. Max lead timing or certain degrees at WOT. Set it with a dial indicator and lock it down. Bad thing with me needing max lead timing with alky being around 27^ means startup timing at say 20*. try kicking that over. HAHAHAHAHAHA

they work great on banshees and 250r's but they also dont have 86mm stroke and bore.

The benefit of not riding at night or in wet conditions, and the other benefit of owning a part that's not being made anymore...who needs replacement parts anyway?
Also, why worry about a lighting coil going out?
That doesn't affect operation of the engine.

Top ten list of BENEFITS when using a PVL on the LT500

1.  A timing curve that DOES not compliment the LT500 needs.
2.  Frequent holes in the dome of the piston.
3.  Broken kick starter parts.
4.  Brused/ broken right foot or ankle.
5.  Difficulty starting.
6.  Accelerated ware on clutch baskets.
7.  Accelerated ware and broken transmission teeth.
8.  Accelerated ware on chain, sprokets and tires.
9.  Lack of traction or "hook up" on dry or poor traction surfaces.
10. Ignition rotor is not keyed to the crankshaft, increasing installation time and increasing the possibility of the rotor slipping on the crank shaft

Well if trying kick start it is fun stock i couldn't imagine trying with it advanced/retarded. A trip over the bars when it kicks back anyone could do without

Sounds like you need to kick an XT/TT 500!!!! LOL They WILL LITERALLY throw you over the bars if you don't line the marks up when trying to kick it. It don't matter how big you are you will go sailing or have a BROKE foot LOL

Don't you lose a %-age of bottom end torque when you go to a PVL since you don't have that high of rotational mass/inertia to help move the motor? And seems like you'd need to slip the clutch a whole lot to keep it running down low in the rpm's in say, technical stuff too huh?

Sounds like it would only be good for single purpose drag bikes, losing low end format sound good for mx wonder if cartee#2 knows this?

Totally different riding style then most of you. I stay extremely high in the RPM's so the rotational weight loss is a benefit to me(not all). I'm back working 60hours a week but sunday I'll get a video of me and the hybrid in action on track and maybe you'll see where I'm coming from. I shift a lot and use the hell out of the clutch but never really come off the throttle much at all. Keep the RPMs up and the grunt's there at all times with a dump of the clutch. Like VTEC in a Honda car, keep it above a certain RPM between shifts and it never disengages allowing max potential of the power curve. Yeah i go through clutches a lot more than most(ltr450) but I make it perform and I win so to me it's just part of the gameplan. Not saying you cant win a MX race lugging the quad, just saying I can't win like that. Probably makes no sense to most of you but you shall soon see. As far as timing one.... degree wheel is your friend.... find the power where you need it and then play with jetting and a/s for fine tuning. I think you'd be surprised at how much more response you get with a hotter, lighter, tunable ignition. As far as lights go, run a splitter off the hot wire going to the coil and wire it in to you factory kill switch and it's like magic, the light shines and the factory switch still functions correctly.

so you run one? in a zilla with good compression to run race fuel and kickstart it? coming from a guy that has ran one, they suck. I would run stock. by the time you spend the $ on a brand new pvl. your not far off from a msd set up. with unlimited tuning for timing, rev limiter, a&b curve, launch limiter.

depends on where you buy your stuff from.

59.95 for the MSD 8232 coil (coil and plug)

319.95 for the MSD 4217 cdi (harness, software and cdi)

i have a custom flywheel with a MSD Hall Effects pickup, but a very good friend of mine uses the stock honda flywheel and pick up with his 370. works fine. he has it running with the ground on the stator floated. uses a battery for startup and than the stator produces enough power to run the ignition.

plug wire

some sort of battery (12v to 18v) i run a Milwaukee 18v cordless battery.

wire crimps, on off switch

a computer to tune the cdi. I use a laptop and the cdi comes with a data link connector so I had to buy a cable from office depot to go from data to usb.

So for maybe a little more than a complete PVL with a generic curve, you could spend a little more and have the better alternative.

But stock works fine on ALL of our bikes.

My MSD is for the Liger. I needed to get everything I can get out of it and with multiple timing points from 0* up to 50* from 0 rpms to 16,000 rpms. I couldnt go wrong.

Yes I do, several actually. The one I use is a Motoplat which is an older version of PVL. Bought it for 87 Kawasaki Tecate-4. Had a backing plate machined and notched for counter balancer and put it on my old 86 LT250r which picked it up 3-4 tenths in 1/8th mile and now it's on my 500 engine. It's all personal preference and what you can make work for you in MX. Example: Some people run stabilizers, some people don't. I don't. I'm a physical/aggressive rider and I'll put the quad where i want it. Some people want low end stump pulling power and lug there quads, rarely use the clutch to prevent arm pump. While I like all of my quads to rev fast and I use the clutch and shifter as much as possible. It doesn't vary from 4 stroke to 2 stroke to me. I ride them all like they're underpowered kx125's and stay in the peak of the powerband, shift when needed, and use my body weight transfer to make it hook. For the mud or rainy conditions I have a 7.5oz custom machined flywheel weight to bolt to it if needed. That's just my setup though and it's what I prefer over the lazy rev, sluggish response. I also run hotter plugs.

I ride it, wrench on it, and even wash it myself lol. It's all just preference though seriously. What works for me may be hell on you. ILOVECOMPRESSION. So adjustable ignition curve is great for me. Just takes tinkering with, trial and error, to find the sweet spot. Performance on the track is 10x better than a number on a graph in my book, but if a number is all your looking, for you'll never get it from me.

Nope where's this video of your hybrid at? And I'm planning on running my 500 in some amateur races locally. I'll most likely get my arse handed to me being on a factory suspension 88 500 but I don't care just wanna try it and see if I like it better than drag racing.
