Crank case Bearing
« on: August 21, 2013, 12:48:42 am »
since last ive been on looking at zilla stuff, the main source of info seems to have vanished.

would anyone happen to know anything about this? I though I remember reading back in the day some guys were boring out the crank bearing area of the cases so that they could use a larger bearing on the crank. again if I remember correctly it was so they could somewhat correct the problem of the bearing spinning in the case.

I know about inserts and what not, im talking running a larger crank bearing.

any info would be great. I have a zilla motor in pieces in my basement with every zilla problem.

I don't think a bigger main bearing could be used. There's not enough room to go wider, and the cases are already weak in between the RH main bearing and balancer bearing. They best solution to that problem is hybrid ceramic main bearings in my opinion. They are stronger than normal steel bearings and last longer. Not as cheap, but you get what you pay for.

well I check into the ceramic bearing, but this does nothing to prevent what I was asking about. Ive did some research and found that the XXl cranks on the banshee motors use a 72mm bearing (given the correct case) the same as the zilla. this made me think I could possibly use a tz/maxload bearing like I used on my cheetah.

anywho, I was thinking as long as the spots that were being hogged out were reinforced buy some welds on the backing side, you could get a larger crank bearing to press in. my plan isn't to build a bb zilla but a less maintenance/more reliable motor and wont have to worry about the weak cases. unfortunetly ive check my cases and feel as if they are done. I will be buying a new set of cases and i want to makesure they don't walk down the same road as every other zilla.

I asked Jerry Hall about that a while ago. This is what he said.

"I have tried welding up the weak areas of the crankcase. The welding always distorts the areas in the region of the weld and most of the weak spots are close enough to an area that has a bearing pocket, or surface that has a very important dimension. Some of these areas do not have enough aluminum to allow re-machining the distorted area."

Not that I've ever heard. Usually a Banshee thing.

He's on here. MotorGeek is his name.

Also, I don't think the main bearing size is an issue for normal Zillas. The bigger concerns are the porting is not adequate, the wrist pin is to low in the piston and too small, the rod and it's bearings are too small and too short, the crank pin is too small and too long, the cylinder head design is wrong, the exhaust valve design is obsolete, and the trans gears have lousy hardening. Why the hell do we like this thing so much? -->
