I asked Jerry Hall about that a while ago. This is what he said.

"I have tried welding up the weak areas of the crankcase. The welding always distorts the areas in the region of the weld and most of the weak spots are close enough to an area that has a bearing pocket, or surface that has a very important dimension. Some of these areas do not have enough aluminum to allow re-machining the distorted area."
