Ram air intake for air box
« on: March 09, 2013, 04:38:32 am »
So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be taking a crack at making my own aluminum air box. My idea is that the tubular frame that's open under the gas tank could be made into a ram air tube by cutting a hole through the plate behind where the radiator mounts along the interior diameter of the tube then bracing that hole with a x brace or cross brace for rigidity. This would allow for air to flow better less restricted into the frame tubing and into the air box. If I'm over thinking this please let me know, a lot of you guys are more technically minded toward this sort of thing than I am. Also I'm curious if this is a good idea would it be wise to patch the existing hole in the frame tube or leave it open?

Ram air might work on a diesel truck or a muscle car but there is one problem that I see with this idea. The radiator will block off a lot of the airflow. And what does get through will be warmer, less dense air. That is bad for hp. Plus the length of the tubing in the frame & all the bends would hurt power that much more. The tried & proven intakes & filters that some of us run seem to be the best bet.

However if you still like the ram air idea, try to fab up something like what the Harley drag guys are using. It works for them so you might try to experiment with it.

the other issue i see is that if you are riding behind someone you will suck in a lot of dirt but that depends on what you are riding on.
ram air set ups also pressurize the air box at speed so the air box would have to be sealed.
if you want to give it a shot i would say do it, i doubt many have tried this set up so you dont truly know if it works or not.

If your building an aluminum air box, you can mount an intake tube with a cowl on the side.
I may be wrong but If your going to use the backbone, you'll have the radiator interfering with the flow of air into the tube. You would want an unobstructed flow.
Success only come before work in the dictionary.

If it is to be of any benefit, you'd need a pressure carburetor too.
