Honda clip
« on: July 07, 2013, 06:03:20 pm »
Anyone ever try a 250r clip? It wouldn't be bad but round tubing to square. The two quads parked next to one another and every damn day those crazy thought occur. The Honda frame is in rough shape too so it wouldn't hurt one bit cutting it up. Maybe making some sort of things that slide together, little plates with the inside diameters fitting just nicely inside the tubing? ;) nice and light? Maybe drill the middle out.

From what I understand, the 400EX is basically a round tube version of the old TRX-250R frame. Maybe this could be an option as well.

O sorry. It seems El Diablo did answer. But the bike is here and money is an issue. And everything is possible. It's simple connect round tubing to square. Strong,  and light. Dad said put some long ass rods in there or something. He'll no. Cmon there are quad gurus on here. Any ideas at all? It sounds so simple. I think someone did a plate or something but can it be done lighter?

Whoa! Z400 looks like square tubing. Are you putting a plate on there to connect it or what?

Assuming the frame rails would line up you could get square to round adapters made that would slip into the tubing, plug weld them and also weld the joint.  In order to really give you a good answer I woud have to have both frames sitting in front of my to pull measurements and see how they would fit together.

Your dad is right on taking some tubing and putting it inside, I need to talk to my buddy in how he plans to do mine but that is definitely an option, And I very HIGHLY doubt the frames will line right up (I know the z400 wont) so that's out the window.

It can be done. I was checking the frame of that TRX out Saturday (oh wait I have a 400EX sitting in my yard too.....) and was thinking how nice it would be. I'm gunna do some measuring tomorrow between LT and EX. It would be a PAIN to do it but hey, it would be sick. And seriously trick.

The best way to do it would be fab a front clip that would line up with the Suzuki frame and keep the Honda dimensions/ geometry for the a-arm's.  Easier said than done if you don't have access to the tools I know but would be the best way.  I've been thinking about clipping  one of my 250 frames.

I think we could blend the frames together. The hardest thing is keeping the Honda geometry with the Suzuki frame. LOL. It may all blend in but where's the steering stem gunna be? How's the plastics gunna mount? Idk. I'm gunna do some looking and measuring tomorrow.

And I'm cutting the front end off my 88 LT ASAP for a different reason

The biggest concern I have is where you graft the 2 frames together a weak point is created.  If you fab a custom front clip you could make sure it ties in with the existing frame at a point where a gusset could be added.  Using the actual Honda frame clip you may not be able to add that extra reinforcement.

Best thing at this point would be to set the bare frames side by side and start pulling measurements.

Allright! One day while wired on mountain dew and taking some a few measurements it seemed really simple but after looking at it a bit there maybe a little more too it. Once the frames get stripped down it'll be easier to really see. Keeping the geometry the same, keeping everything square and plum. Man there is way more to this than...

Wait until you see how long it takes to  do it rite. There's a reason more people dont do it themselves.  And a reason we wouldnt do it any cheaper.
I'm working on a new frame for a crf150/250rx with new ztyle trx 90 plastic doing a retro fit with yz80 until I can get to the whole new frame.
Look at availability of parts and the quality of them before you commit to  building something.

You're talking about a trike conversion?

And yea that's something else that I've been thinking about is how the steel between the 2 frames is. The suzuki's are bad about cracking as it is

The Trx has some hard miles on it. It almost looks like an old race bike. The back of it is all gussets andhas more ccracks than a sidewalk but the front looks good, feels good, I replaced all the bearings, cleaned and greased everything with amsoil marine grease. Chuckie and I talked for great lengths about this and the bikes, what's involved. One shot. Everything has to be perfect if it's gonna be done or don't do it. The welding I won't do. My buddy is certified and can use the cash. I think our neighbor in the back is an engineer and just retired. It might be time to get a case of beer for him. He sure liked the big bite of ribeye the other day right off the grill:)

No not trikes.....
I am the one who does the yfz clips or should say we , me and fasttrackfab. No blending of two factory frames. We rengineered the front half of the frame and bent all new tubes and use the yfz mount points for easy parts.

If your gonna go through the time and effort to build go with something newer and easier to get. The 450 or 400ex is good but the 250 r stuff is getting harder to find in good shape.

The new frame I'm working on is for my girlfriend 250 4 stroke easy start button smaller 3/4 size frame to fit her and light So she can throw it around instead of looking like a rag doll on the yfz will basic all be a super mini class machine.  When that's done I'll start my next weapon x.

Ohh oh ok. Yea I knew you are the one who does the YZF clips, nasty 250 motors and are the evil genius behind the weapon X chassis lol I saw 'CRF150/250RX' and couldn't help but think 'trike' lmao (for a reason, LOL)

And yea I know what you are saying. I was thinking about that today. Just because of how different the two front halves are from each other.

That seems the way to go instead of trying to use baling twine and wire to hold the front on, or trying to make some rinky dink connector that is going to cracks the first chance it gets. You can almost picture a big tumor mass of weld over a connecting piece with a gusset, adding another gusset and it's about as ugly as it gets.

I'm not a fan of the z in any way, other than that engine in the super moto bike. Supposedley its a 250r copy front end I've never measured to see.
