Gas tank for lt50
« on: January 07, 2013, 02:47:20 pm »
I'm looking for a gas tank for an lt50.
The one we have is rusted out.
Any ideas on how to repair the tank we have?
There are no holes in tank just filled with rust and cant get it clean!
Suggestions welcome!

There's products out there that line the inside of the tank. Kreem is one.

Once you get the major stuff out, mix approximately .25 cup of toilet bowl cleaner with a half gallon of water then slosh it around inside the tank for around 5 minutes. Then rinse with clean water & dry as quickly as posible. then give the inside a heavy coat of WD-40. Use care when working with toilet bowl cleaner.

I had a tank on my 93 Dr 350 that I was in debate about replacing until a friend told me about Works Toilet Bowl cleaner.  I found them the cheapest at the dollar store.  I used three bottles overall and after all said and done was very impressed with the outcome.  Note take petcock off or it will eat it right off!  Learned the hard way.  Take one bottle and pour it in and shake for 10-15 min, its like a acid and your gonna hear it fizz and make some noise.  It took me three bottles to get the outcome I was pleased with.  After your done rinse out with water throughly and I used a gallon of diesel to treat the metal so the tank wouldn't flash rust.  Cost me $8 or less and looked like a brand new tank.

I just picked up an 86 LT50 and had the same problem.  I dumped a bit of straight gas into the tank to loosen the big stuff and then broke out the CLR and mixed it 50/50 about 30 minutes later my tank was very clean and was no longer dumping orange fuel.  Bike runs great now BTW.
