I've been thinking hard about wether I should get my frame powder coated or leave it black since my brother painted it black at his body shop.  What I want to know,  what is the name of the blue for these old suzukis?  Im thinking about having a builder (Carl) take apart my bike, completely go through everything, while he's got the engine out, send the bike off to get powder coated blue like it should be.  I like the idea of having it painted so I could get more color options but I just can't bring myself to paint it.  How much does it cost?  How long does it take to powder coat frame and misc. parts? What should I be aware of?  What should I know before I do it?

also, put a bolt in with a washer where you plan on grounding your electrical.  This will prevent you from having grind these areas later to get a good ground.

$300 to do just a frame?
The mirror blue is a basic powder $12/lb. Looks like you only need a single coat.

I had my frame  done on my old banshee. I paid $360 and this included them blasting, then stripping, then chemical prep of the metal, then 2 layers of color, then layer of clear. The powder was also $29/lb.
It would have only been $240 without the clearcoat. The clearcoat just adds more protection and makes it shinier.

$250 - 300 is what I paid for my frame. RAL 5010 is really close to the original blue.

I don't believe anything was powder coated from the factory. Just painted. But I have an '88 500 and I had the frame, foot pegs, wheel hubs, sprocket hub and rear brake hub all coated in RAL 5010 I believe. I did a few other odds and ends in blue as well. I had my A-arms and rear brake lever coated in a silver/gray color. And then I had my headlight bracket and front wheel spindles coated in gloss black. I got all of that done for about $300. If I was smart I would have coated the fender support brackets and steering stem in gloss black too while I was at it. Just remember to mask off certain areas where machined tolerances are critical (the front wheel spindles for example). I actually left my old bearings in the front wheel hubs until after the powder coating was done. Preparation will pay off for you when you go to reassemble everything.

old room mate of mine back in early 2000's had that exact powder.   Maybe a bit more purple.  Looks good.

I have never seen an ATV frame that is powder coat from the factory yet.

As for my frame, this is what the $360 bought.
It would be black in the shade, brownish in some light, then green in the light.

How they do it, they don't say but most likely it is metallics. They do say the colors would vary depending on how the powder was put on.


I had many of my small parts, carrier, all 4 hubs, linkage, and some other small things powdered gloss black with some green flakes. Those parts would be black but under sun light you could see the hint of green in them and some times the green would "sparkle".

There are many things you can do with powder to set your quad off. There are many flip flops, florescents, textures, etc.

I seen a "black chrome" it was neat!
