Tips Removal of front wheel bearings
« on: April 02, 2013, 04:48:27 pm »
Any tips on removing front wheel bearings on lt500.  Pressing them in should be easy, but nothing to press against to get them out.. Any tricks. do you just  heat it and use a pick tool to get it out...So far that has not worked for me.

Take 1 of the rotor bolts and drop it in and use a punch to knock the bearing out. worked for me several times. a light heating with a propane torch might help too.

Badmoon do you mean one of the three screws that hold the rotor to the hub?

yes, allen head. the inner bearing is larger inside diameter, drop the bolt in from that side and punch out the spindle nut side bearing.

You can also use an old socket. If you have one that's rusted in, that is going to suck. Cut it out with a dremel.
You can get the bearing flush with the end by taking a bolt, run it through the socket and bearing. Find a washer that is bigger then the bearing area, put that and a nut on. as you tighten the nut, the head of the bolt will push the socket down till the bearing is flush with the end. Tap it the rest of the way out.
Or just beat it out.
Make sure the end you push the bearing to doesn't have a lip or burr.
A few beers will make all this a little more difficult but a lot more enjoyable.
Success only come before work in the dictionary.

Got it... finally.  I applied a fair amount of heat with propane tourch.  then I tackeled the outer bearing first.  I got a socket a little larger than the bearing and attached an extension.  I droped the socket through the inner bearing towards the outer and the socket rested against the tapered inner race.  With a few good hits it punched out both the outer bearing and the tapered race ( i was not expecting the tapered part to be a race for the spindel--I thought it was just part of the hub.
From there it was easy to just flip the hub over and with a larger socket tap out the larger inner bearing.

Now I have the entire quad apart and ready for powder coating.

So just looked at the manual I was under the impression you could press the bearings out from the rim side to the hub side. Apparently my assumption was incorrect or am I reading the manual wrong? You have to knock them out from the side they're on.

And what if say I tried to press them out from the rim side to the spindle and applied a thorough amount of pressure with a press enough to bend the press bar just a tad.

the rim side, as in the inside? If you are seating the bearing instead of pushing it out. no biggy. just flip it around and go the other way. its all cast. id be more worried about the press. i kinda like to not use a press and use a punch and hammer. that way you can kind of hear whats going on. if you rap on it and it is not coming out a little more gentle heat. the press works good for putting them in. . hondas suck, they are not tapered. id like to shoot the jack hole who did the one.

Got mine out pretty easy once I started knocking them in the correct direction!
