First Zilla Top End Going Together. Couple ?s
« on: February 26, 2013, 10:44:27 am »
My cylinder is done and ill be puttin the bike together over the next couple days.  My questions were:
1. I am using an afm base gasket and will smooth down the ridge between the case halfs under the reed valve. Do I use any ultra gray in this area or am I good cause im using afm?
2.  What is the proper ring end gap?. Im using an 86.5mm wiseco piston.
Thanks.

just put some grey under the reed cage where the cases come together on both sides of the gasket.
i put a very samll dab on all the places where the cases come together, just for my own saftey, i hate
tearing top end off if it has a leak., make sure you clean surface very well, and try to use rubber gloves
cause the oil on your fingers will cause sealeant not to work where you touched it at.

Thank you sir. I thought I heard somewhere that afm gaskets didnt need ultra gray, bit I couldent remember.  The extra protection cant hurt.

even with the amf gasket you will want something on there, and when you take it back apart you can peel
that stuff off of the gasket. i think someone said before you can spray the gasket with some kind of cleaner.
carb or brake I think, not sure what was used, but it will fluff the gasket back up.

Use the green brakeleen non chlorinated. The chlorinated eats the foam.

Ok, so im gonna lightly sand the areas where the case halves meet, clean the surfaces on cylinder and cases with rubbing alcohol, let dry, then use a little ultra grey and the afm gasket. That sound right to you guys?
Thanks for the replies, im being a lot more meticulous with this quad than on prevoius top ends ive done on blasters, banshees and 250r s. Ive never had problems with prevoius top ends, just trying to cover all the zilla weak spots before I go and hammer on this thing.

ya thats about rite, I dont know if I would SAND anything maybe a little scotch brite or a brass tooth brush. One pass with a piece of 400-600 grit sand paper is probably ok to promote adhesion but you can take a lot of material fast with paper or scotch brite if not extremly careful.

Gotcha. I was referring to lightly sand the burr where the case halves meet. Its barely enough to catch a fingernail on, but its there. A lil pass with the scotch bright should clean up the surfaces themselves.
Another thing im gonna try with leak down testing is an expandable bladder used for clearing plumbing drains. Its supposed to handle up to 100 psi.  I will use it to extend into the exhaust port past the pv, pump it up with 20 or 30 psi and see if it seals. Then do leak down with hopefully no question of air leaking past the pv into the tranny. Ill let yall know if it works or not.

I would make sure you are extra careful NOT to sand your mating surfaces, like Ice racer said scotch bite and only a couple passes with that can screw up a case half to case half mating surface.

You can also use 3 bond 1211, I use it on both sides of the gasket all the way around but I always use a new gasket when I put a fresh top end back together.  It does need 24 hours to set up and dry but that stuff is the best I've found for sealer.  Ultra Grey works good also if you're just spotting it where the case halves come together.

A knife sharpening stone can be used to dress the flat mating surfaces, but go easy on the aluminum!

I 3 bond mine and then grey it where the case halfs meet

3bond makes a lot of stuff ONLY get the 1211, it's white

You should be able to get it at your local moto dealer or order it on Amazon

Should be around $20 for a tube that will last a good long while
