LED LIGHTS - NO BATTERY?
« on: February 05, 2016, 05:50:59 am »
87 lt500r. installed pair led's 18w ea. Was told by rep. dealer, should be ok to run these by bypassing stock headlight. Recommended to pull plug boot from stock lamp and wire both Led's into boot plug. Started quad after dark and turned on lights from handlebar switch. Only one side of the boot worked. not sure if lo or high beam side. They light up real bright! much more brilliant than the stock's low, hazy, yellowing headlight. The manufacture rating on the quad 55/60w. QUESTION 2 leds @ 36w. Would it be safe to add one or two more led's without doing any damage to the electrical system? Or possibly both stock lamp w/ 2 led's?
Great reviews on the led's @ $18 pr. plus free shipping, 4 day delivery from usa. Made real solid w/ heavy non corrosive hardware! (also stated in many positive reviews)
Once I'm more sure of the insulation I'll re-wire directly to harness eliminating the shortcut I'm presently tapped into.  Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks Steve

when you add another 2 lights, more likely they will flicker.

Would adding the 2 led's w/ stock headlight draw too much, causing flickering?

stock lighting coils wont be enough.  You can replace the stock ones with the 140w Ricky stator coils.

Thanks for the stator info! I bought one on Ebay just now for $52 new w/ free shipping 130w. for lt500r. Will that extra wattage help with quicker starting? I measured my spark using spark tester w/ well over 8mm. Zilla specks. I actually read it at 11 mm in length. measured from plug wire to frame. Been hard starting while following every tip in the book w/ little help.

No, the 130watts will have nothing to do with starting. It is for lights only.

Check your jetting for that.

At least i'll have brighter lighting! lol Thanks for that!
I've cleaned and rejetted this thing with many new parts with little results.
Question: with the healthy spark I'm getting would that verify my elect. system is fine since shouldn't that be the end result? If so I'm narrowing things down closer to the hard starting situation. thanks for the time here! I'm hoping this might even help others w/ similar situations!

Wont get brighter lights. The LED will be the same brightness as before, you just just run more.

As for the spark, not really. It might look strong, but that doesn't mean it really is strong once inside the engine. You need to ohm out some of the parts to make sure they are still in spec.

Are you doing the proper procedure to fire up the 500 beast?  Do a few priming kicks.  Get piston on the down stroke side of top dead center.  (You can feel this in your foot.  Goes from hard to move to very easy.)  Then let the kicker lever come all the way up and kick it down.

Yes I do all the proper starting procedures. I have owned many 2 strokes plus this is my second Zilla the gorilla! Fast as Hell once started! Very quick response in all gears! 30 pilot - 420 main new! New float seat/needle. Cleaned stock carb thoroughly per specks. Question will sm. shot of starting fluid, only when starting hurt anything? Starts right up every time this way! Wouldn't this mix w/ fuel which has oil? Doesn't need much?

I've used starting fluid on mine a couple times to get it started because my carb doesn't have a choke.

How is the compression?

I've done everything I can do with the carb. So now I'm considering (from advise here) to check the ign. coil. The only problem is trying to remove the 2 Philips screws behind the radiator holding it in. Any help on the removal would be helpful.  thanks

I used a phillips for an electric drill in a small socket to get mine out then replaced the screws with bolts.  Suzuki engineering at its finest.

That's what I thought, too. There seems no other way. Thanks
