1991 FTZ LT250R flat track resto
« on: August 29, 2016, 07:46:50 pm »
Hey guys just figured I'd start a thread for my restoration of the old FTZ flat track Racer'. This quad deserves to be brought back to all its glory so that's what I hope to do! The frame was **** in multiple spots which I patched up last winter but it's time to fix it right. Fresh powdercoat throughout and new bearings and stuff like that. My plan is to go white with the frame and swingarm and keep the laegers a arm's chrome and keep the red plastics. Still not sure about the frame color but white would look sweet I think. Started tearing down last night

Everything is going to get a good cleaning / polishing if it's not getting powdered!

No I believe it's a very old school ftz high flow intake from way back in the day but I'm not positive. Ftz built the motor and worked over the carb so I imagine it was one of their intakes but the welds aren't the prettiest so I don't know

Got her torn down FINALLY! Started sandblasting the frame today so I can properly fix some cracks I had welded up last winter and weld in some gussets. Then it's off to the powder coater! Once upon a time the frame was silver vein I'm thinking about doing that again but can't make up my mind between that, black, a dark gray, or white 😠

I think silver vein would look pretty slick with the red plastics.

Thanks for the input man! Those were my thoughts exactly plus since it had that color waaayyyy back when I think it would be cool to bring her back to all its old glory

Got the gnarly dent out of the FTZ pipe! It was smashed in the worst place possible right on the badge! Happy how it turned out

Thanks! It was not easy! Stuck my arm up inside the pipe and used that little brass auto body tool you can see in one of the pics to gently beat the hell out of it until it was practically gone! One of the tack welds on the badge is broke but otherwise good as new

Well there's been a slight change in plans for this LT build.... the FTZ LT is now going to be a true JP OUTLAW LT250R 😆 had to make a sacrifice and sold my beloved hybrid trx450r / 250r to pickup one of the few jp outlaw LT's left out there. Didn't know how many chances I'd have to get one again. I'm beyond ecstatic to get this build rolling! It's also coming with an 87 big reed LRD built 265 so I'm not sure what motor I will run but either way I'll have a nice backup!

I hope so too! Kinda interested in trying out the MHR pipe that comes with it as well. Buying a front end for it is next on the list and then some nice plastics

The MHR should run good. It was basically an FTZ knock off from what I remember. Would you be interested in lending it out for a couple weeks for some dyno testing?
