Cut it all the way to the very base of the insulator, where it flares out.
From what I can tell, it seems to be pretty close but nothing that should cause the issues you're describing.
Is your PV operating right?
Air leaks?
Fuel flow ok? (doubtful, since it usually shows up in plug chops during extended runs)
Just a few things that could be an issue to double check.
