LT250 86 Questions
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:22:27 pm »
So I have this 1986 lt250r. LT needs some frame work, and crank bearings i think. if not its counter balancer bearings. but I am wondering if I should fix it. what do you guys think? its my first older quad. I did a rebuild on a bike. but this is my first quad and its kinda intimidating.  :o  what should I do with this situation.

Welcome to the site!

You have a few options. Depending on what frame repairs are needed, you might considder looking for an 87+ engine. These engines have  better aftermarket support so finding parts won't be as difficult. Plus you will have an engine with a 6 speed tranny instead of a 5 speed. The engine is a direct fit except that you will either have to put a wishbone in the down tube where the exhaust pipe bolts to the cylinder head or weld in two separate tubes going from the lower frame to the upper ones.

If you want to keep the original engine, you would be better off to do a complete rebuild with new piston & rings, seals, re-cut head, and bore & hone, not just bearing replacement.

is this because of the exhaust head pipe being straight out from the cylinder? and i have pictures. see if it will upload to here. on both sides of the frame in the rear it is thin metal that is or was **** and repaired. and also looks as if water go in the frame and rusted from inside out.

All depends on how much $$$ you have in the quad.Might want to part it out and invest the cash in the newer style.Powervalved motor,6 speed etc.Just my .02...Some quads have sentimental value to some as well so its entirely up to you on where you want to invest.:)
Can,t fix stupid.:)
