WTB 500 transmission

I need a transmission.  My 500 keeps popping out of second gear and I don't want to split the cases, I will if I have too though.  I would prefer to get a bottom end that I can bolt my cylinder too.  A rebuilt tranny is even better.  Anyone have anything?

My 87 zilla sometimes pops out of second gear also, especially when trying to downshift from 3rd it will often go straight to neutral. Can be very frustrating! I've been hesitant to tear into the bottom end, as well, not wanting to have issues like air leaks or something after putting everything back together.

If they are jumping out of gear you are probably going to need to replace at least two gears and possibly a shift fork. 

DO NOT KEEP PRESSURE AGAINST THE SHIFT LEVER WITH YOUR FOOT IN ATTEMPT TO HOLD IT IN GEAR. 

Trying to hold it in gear burns the tip s of the shift forks. 

I hate to say it but you need to park it or fix it before something breaks.....then it will be real expensive.

It's parked and the motor is off he's just a **** and doesn't want to split his cases. I keep telling him lets just do it but he won't sack up and just wants to buy a good condition working bottom end.

I have spare transmissions I may sell if the price is right. I can assemble a good bottom end for the right price as well

LOL.  It's looking like I will just be tearing this bottom end apart.

It's been parked since it happened.  Already took the motor off the frame and the cylinder is off.

Is it taken apart?  Are all the gears and pieces there?

Motoman, IMHO if you have good cases with no known problems (other than second gear), you would probably be money ahead in the end if you just repair your existing engine.  Spend the money to replace worn and damaged parts, get the gears back cut and walk away with a solid bottom end.  If you just buy another one, it is a crap shoot, you might be having the same problems as soon as you fire it up.

When back cutting gears .... Does this require shifting down to first when stopped? No down shifting while moving?

No. The transmission functions normally.

They cut an angle on the dogs so when the gears engage they pull each other together rather than pushing apart. When they push apart, pressure is put on the shift fork causing it to bend or otherwise fail.

I have bottom ends that are assembled and ones that are apart, all the pieces for transmissions are there on the disassembled ones.

step 1: splt cases
step 2: send to WCR for backcutting 200.00
step 3: new shift forks and springs
step 4: reassemble and enjoy, its better than new.

My trans was back cut by WCR. It works great. Who else does that work? HPR?

That's right. I knew someone else did them for Mike but I couldn't remember the name... Mike said Bob's turn time was "highly variable" ... So we went with WCR.

We also back cut gears.  I do not recommend it unless you are just trying to avoid buying new gears because the dogs are rounded to the point that it jumping out of gear.

In step 3:  are you referring to clutch springs or the shift drum and paw springs?
