Tires
« on: February 01, 2013, 05:56:56 pm »
What size tires you guys running? I need a new set and want to hear some options. I think mine now are  rear 22/11/10 & front  21/7/10. The rear looked a little big for my liking.

Rear are 21/7/10  I think Thoses are the fronts  if I'm correct rear rims at 10 inch wide so a 7 inch tire is s no go

Yes 21-7-10 is front wheel

Now that is stock size. Most guys run a tire in the rear that is smaller than the front.  You will have better control of bike. But remember when you use a smaller tire the swinger gets pretty low to the ground.
I run 21 in front and a 20 and 18 in the rear for dirt.

The tire size by itself isn't quite as important as the relationship between the front and rear tires.
Front tires should be slightly larger, an inch or two, than the rear.
If you have more tire on the rear, then you'll have bad understeer and steering input will increase.
18-20" on the rear is ideal for most all environments, 21-22" is great for desert X/C but you've still got to find a front that's an inch or two larger.
Anything less than 18" is worthless unless you're running on pavement.
Wider is better in all situations for the rear, on the front there's several considerations depending on terrain and type of riding.
Last consideration is sidewall...the more sidewall you have, the more it will cushion the bike and conform to terrain (more traction).
The drawbacks...tires will wander and handling gets a little sloppier.
Flipside, less sidewall has less traction and a harsher ride, but handling on smooth surfaces improves.

Thanks west. I thought you buy tires and go never put that much thought in to like my race car. So for best over all riding a 21 front and 20 rear is good or go lower I'm going to be in all conditions mx trails mud everything. How about front tire width what's the smallest width you can put on there how about the tire ply I see different thickness where all does this help besides a harder surface for  rock sticks nails  to go into ? I know wider is allway better on rear I think kenda is the only tire that 20/12/10 all terrain tire. They got some wide slicks for the 10 inch rims

ZillaJoe...overall your best bet is just that, and you'll find most guys running an LT with that exact combo.
For MX, a little smaller is better from what I've heard, on trails and mud there's no substitute for aired down big tires for all-around performance and clearance.
You can use the 21F/20R as a middle ground, or buy two sets tailored for the two different riding styles (smaller for MX, larger for trail/mud).
There's a lot of advantages to bigger tires, but one disadvantage is weight and rolling resistance of a heavy tire aired way down.
That's why you generally see smaller tires on MX tracks, because they're trying to get every ounce of performance for that particular terrain.
Flat trackers and pavement use even smaller tires than MX, I'm not even going to guess why but they look a bit silly to me.

You don't have a lot of options for narrow fronts unless you go with drag style tires.
I've noticed that narrower fronts reduce steering effectiveness as well as making it less stable at higher speeds (off road, not on pavement).
The only place a skinny front tire helps with steering is in the dunes, where it'll sink into the sand...but flotation suffers due to higher pressures needed and a smaller footprint.

Size consideration aside, a very important aspect is which brand and style of tire you buy.
Some tires that are otherwise identical handle completely different (traction, sidewall stiffness, puncture resistance, etc.).
Can't really tell you a whole lot about which tire would best suit you, as all of my experience is with desert riding (baja/sand/rocky trails) and I haven't looked into any tires other than that aspect.

WeestTexsKing-- I will post pics of the build.  It is almost down to the frame to be powder coated and rebuilt. Installing all new bearings seals everywhere, motor, calipers you name it.  Going to have PEP shocks, a Q motor, +3+1 stem and a tall soft Hi Flite desert seat (I'm 6'5")   so its a work in progress buy post my build as it comes together.  I just got my AEM filter in the mail yesterday.  9""  HOLY COW ITS big.  I think in could supply air for my Ford Powerstroke!!

Joe. The tall desert seat was something like 90 bucks but I don't exactly remember. That is for foam only.  I didn't get their seat cover as I didnt care for  for their patern l. They had regular foam seats as well but I did not price those.

Those bigger tires make it look beefy!
Do they rub the fenders at all?
Only time I tried tires that size my quad didn't have any fenders to rub LOL
