86 lt250r rebuild help
« on: June 23, 2013, 11:09:40 am »
rebuild is in the process. all is well UNTIL I put the cylinder on the motor. The piston jams at close to the top of the stroke! then it just seizes up until I knock it out.    BUT WHAT IS CAUSING IT TO JAM IN THE CYLINDER???

Can you take some pics of it. Is it the right piston? How done the bore?

What kind of piston is it? Are you getting the rings into the metal taps on the piston? Pic could tell us if something is wrong your not seeing!!

Was the cylinder ported, and were the ports chamfered? Sounds like a ring is catching the lip of the exhaust port..

Do you have the ring gaps aligned right? Is the arrow on the piston facing toward the exhaust?
Ain't ever seen it......but I have heard it.

Did you try the old piston back in again to see if it went in fine.  Have you check your  new rings inside the cylinder to see what the gaps are. If you havent, check them in the top and take the piston threw the top with no rings and use it to push the ring down the cylinder.Check the top and middle and bottom. Also have you measured your new piston. Hope this helps you.

sounds like one of the rings is not lined up with pin.

have u tried turning it over with the base gasket bolts loosend? if piston is the same and the rings are aligned with pins and bottom end wasn't disassembled, u may have a bent rod D?

Found the time to go work on her. It seemed to go well my only problem now is I cant get the rings to stay on the pins? whenever the cylinder is installed the the rings around the piston aren't even all around. I assume because there on top of the little pins? So how do I fix this?

Hope the rings didn't distort or scratch your cylinder... Usually, its pretty simple to hold them in place by hand while you're dropping the cylinder into place.

SHE LIVES!!!!!! Somewhat....... It starts just doesn't want to idle I have to keep giving it gas to keep it alive. I'd normally take it for a drive to clean out but I was hoping to do a few heat cycles before taking it for a drive. What do you guys suggest? Btw putting the choke on just kills the motor.
