88 motor upgrades
« on: April 03, 2014, 07:14:05 am »
I am almost done with my chassis and going to start on the engine soon.I'm going to try flat track  and some woods racing to but most of my riding is done in a gravel pit.I was going to leave it the way it is which is stock bore v3 reeds fmf pipe and silencer and stock carb and no porting but due to a broken finger I gotta wait longer to ride so what are some things I can do to be sure to beat some lightly moded 450s, and raptor 700 and banshees. I'm the only one that ride lts and most never even heard of a Zilla so I wanna make sure they don't ever forget them either lol.

You'll need a little help if you have a stocker.  at the very least, send your dome off to get reshaped and set your squish.  But since that requires removing the jug, you may as well send it off for some porting too.   +k2 (Y)

The cases are split on mine I gotta change crank bearings because the idiot that did my paint on the engine let it sit without the cylinder and head on it and in the humidity rusted the crank bearings tight

I dont remember the head being very expensive.  Q did mine a long time ago and all i did was send him my head plus like $75 bucks and he sent me one that had already been done.

You might PM icerracer about the prices.

Porting varies depending on the type of riding you'll be doing.

That's seems way cheap for Q work. More like 125 + 50 dollar copper gasket.

$200 just to machine a head?  LOL.  Machining a dome from a blank only took my friend and I like 20 minutes.

That's what I was thinking I'm a machinist for a living and recut the head on a cr 250 that had blown up and only took about 20 minutes to make a print and write a program and run it.it doesn't even cost that much to bore out a cylinder and sleeve it and finish bore it.from what I understand all that is done is shape the squish area to the same profile as the piston and just a matter of taking material off the face to get the squish to around.090 am I right on that bc if I am that's like a20 minute thing.

Don't get me wrong I know out west is more expensive place then here in central Illinois but the prices on motor work it's about double what it is here.for what some people are charging for port work and fixing the squish I can throw another 300 bucks in and buy another running Zilla or a running 250 for 600.for me it's a big price difference.I know that on here you are paying for the knowledge of the lt motors when you get work done.

The work involved for the $200 I paid to Jerry to get the head modified and o ringed was reasonable when you find out what it takes. Takes time

Piston deck height has to be determined for correct compression ratio. In my case the cylinder ears were reinforced, decking the cyl base surface was required changing piston deck height.

Welding up the coolant passages in the head is needed then more restricted passages machined in to mimic the oem head gasket coolant passages.

O ring machining

Squish &  combustion dome machined to correct specs, after getting piston deck height determined.

That's a fairly good price for all that.I'm just saying for me living in central Illinois with lower costs of things I'm nit wanting to pay west coast prices.I know it's higher than here.I just wish there were some lt builders around this area.

Send your cases, cylinder, carb and head to Iceracer or Jerry Hall. You'll have those screaming banshees, screaming your name for mercy.

It was super cheap.  I remember thinking i couldn't even buy a stock head for this.

The copper head gasket could of been a separate charge, i bought a bunch of stuff at once.
