Truck bed liner or undercoating
« on: December 12, 2012, 12:26:21 am »
Ok i know powder coating is king. But have been thinking  and wanted to hear some input. So question is how do you think a good quality bed liner would work and also you think brushing or a spray can would be better. Products would be a line x if brushed or 3m undercoat if sprayed

Think that stuff is pretty heavy and goes on thick. The good stuff anyway. That means alot of taking away the material just to bolt stuff up.

I got this onesuzukiquadracerhq
-undercoating is like oil/tar by nominal definition.
-Bedliner is urethane/pvc/plastic that dries had and is semi-paintable and as durable as the product you use.   Its great, but looks terrible if not sprayed well(Heavy coat twice. Then back it up and LIGHTLY pulse spray like the ak47). If not, it will look really bad, like the skim on milk.

Bedliner is cool when used properly. Will not stand up to dirtbike boots, don't even try.

Powder coating is the chit for sure. colours not as good as water based automotive paint however. Water is the greatest solvent......Some powders/colours look right, others look off somehow.....

Don't they use paraffin wax for undercoatings?
It doesn't seem to last very long.

The bedliner might actually be a good idea if implemented correctly.
Powdercoating the frame and such will give you the corrosion protection needed, and the bedliner will provide an added layer of "cushion" to keep rocks and such from damaging the powdercoating as well as helping to seal the frame from the elements.
If a brush on was used and the liner took some damage on the last ride, you could simply brush some more on and you're good to go.
I suppose standard paint on the frame would be fine too, just as long as the frame is sealed from moisture.
Won't be as tough as PC+liner, but my guess is that it would be tougher than PC alone.
With brush on liner, you can elect to only use it on high scuff areas, coat the entire frame and skip the mounting points, or just coat the visible areas of the frame (no sense in coating the part behind the radiator, right?).
A-arms and swingarm would be another good place for it.

Keep in mind that the liner adheres best to a rough surface, so if you've got chrome a-arms then it probably won't last very long at all.
Bare metal and roughened paint seem to adhere about the same, though you don't have the benefit of corrosion protection with bare metal.

Parrafin wax is not bees wax or ear wax lol it is a hydrocarbon with a static boiling/evaporation temperater. :) taken from oil deposits in the earths upper crust. :) petrolium

I 80 % on getting a good name brand bed liner and going that route I just feel it woo be more durable applied correctly over pc or paint pc is good but if you use a good name brand automotive paint it will hold up just as long if not longer than pc.

NO NO NO, I must disagree to agree with you. Single stage spray can paint is as good as womens nail polish.

2 part auto motive paint is good because the colour chart is out of this world and the paint is pretty good lately..... It however costs 100 dollars for the smallest amount prepaired for you.

In a spray can you will want an epoxy paint. krylon etc have it in limited colours. next best just enamel with even less colours available. The smell of enamel paints will remove humans in 100 yard radius for many hours.
Most paint proffesionals have probly no idea what epoxy paint is. so good luck.

Automotive paint in any form at all will get you no where fast  O0

never paint offroaders with automotive paint ever. As a rule. We nickel/chrome/PC/Polish because it doesn't fall off by the time you get back to the trailer.
Perhaps painting stuff can wait...... You will probly end up with fancy pants engine mounts and bits on the swingarm painted red blue purple and lilac but to me it will look crappy when pos engine mounts are painted extravagant but the next item over will be ignored because it is to complicated for you.
Don't shoot the messenger. im just sayin..... I have an issue with 95 percent of peoples paint schemes because they paint some items like they are special, BUT they are not different from an engineers perspective. Does that make sense?

Sublunacy--pass around what you were smoking while typing. I dont know what you said either :)

I used duplicolor airisol can spray on bed liner on my old 4x4 ATV.  I did it about 2 years ago.  I did the racks, foot rests, bumper, and any parts of the frame I could get to.  Covers rust nicely. ;)   It is easy to touch up.  My only complaint is scuffs very easy when sprayed on smooth surfaces like the clutch belt cover.  All in all its cheep and looks far better than rust.  I painted the steel wheels with it. I regret that, as on spinning wheels it scratches up too easlly.
