Quadzilla or lt250r
« on: April 24, 2013, 07:18:38 am »
Hey guys, I am looking for a new quad something cheap for the summer. Mainly for dunes and trails. I am used to riding 450's but sold mine last summer. My question is will a lt250r be to slow for me? how reliable are the zilla's and the r's? Here Is the Zilla I am looking at, it was rebuilt last summer by a shop and he has paperwork. Do you think this will be a good investment and be somewhat reliable with regular maintenance?

And here is the 250 I might look at:

The 250 is super clean and the guy sounds pretty cool. Is was a stock rebuild so no performance parts ill I be able to keep up with my friends on 450's? what all should I be looking for when I take a look at one of these?

Thanks

Just from the pics I'd buy the 250 over that trashed 500. Just from glancing at the 500 the rear brake reservoir line is installed incorrectly, I'd be looking a lot deeper into that 500 before I put out my cash. Buying someone else's pos is not the way to go

That's how I was feeling the 250 looks super clean and well maintained. I would be running 93 in it though and he said that if I want it to run better to put smaller jets in the carb. anyone have any suggestions on jet size for that 250? Also is there anything I could do to it for a few hundred to make it keep up with the 450's and still be somewhat reliable?

That's not a bad price on the 500 if it runs as claimed.

I had a LT250R. It ran pretty good. I did not have any porting work, just the bolt on mods. I think if you come off a modern 450 to a LT250R it will be somewhat disappointing (I have a YFZ450) in the dunes. There are guys on here that can make the 250 into a monster that will have no problem hanging with a 450 but its going to cost some time and money.

The 500 is beast if it has the proper modifications and durability issues fixed. Again - time and money.

My bottom line is this: Inspect the Zilla, if it runs well, that not a bad deal. You might have to address some issues at some point. Understand what you'll get out of the 250. If you just want to dune and hit the trails asap. Find a clean 450. They are super cheap right now.

Im in Wayne Co. by the way!! Welcome!!
Ain't ever seen it......but I have heard it.

I'd do the 500 but then again the first 500 I saw in person I bought. Running with new tires all the way around for $1500. I'd offer the dude with the 500 $1300-$1400 cash show up wit the cash after you go through it. 9 times out of 10 when people see the cash right in front of them they'll take the deal. Heck I am halfway done with my 500 and I did a complete ground up resto and got port work all the reliability mods and a Q pipe and will have right around $3500-$4000 all said and done. Of course that's on the cheap side cause I didn't go all out on a lot of stuff. Now I'm halfway done I want to buy a 450 sell the motor sell the frame for my 500 and put my 500 motor in a new 450 frame and suspension. Might keep my eye out for a cheap 400ex and a cheap cr500 engine or bike though and make that my hybrid.

I would love to get another 450 but I just can't find anything in my price range. I do not really want to spend any more than $2200 and I can not find a 450 in decent shape anywhere near that. If I put a pipe and a new reed cage on that 250r will it open it up pretty good?

To me, it would depend on what kind of riding you do. Tracks, trails, with a little port work reeds and good pipe, the 250 is great. Much lighter and easier to control = less arm pump on the ride.

Dunes, drags, straight out hauling tail, go Zilla.

w+ That 250 is nice, zilla looks kinda hammered. When your searching CL search, grand rapids, central mich, northern mich, saginaw bay city midland and thumb area CL's too. There is a ton of LT250r and Lt500R quadracers in michigan, and quite a few michigan members on this site. With some good porting, v2 reeds, zilla carb and SCP pipe that 250 will eat 450's all day. And eventually if you need more power, you can swap in a zilla motor pretty easily and have a hybrid.

I am from Fenton MI and I have been looking all over Michigan and haven't  found to many zillas that are clean and around $2000. I emailed him and he said it already has a carb that is bigger than stock. how much would a good pipe and reeds cost and how much power would they give me? I wouldn't want to rip into the motor since it was just built.
