Restored already ? Man that was fast !

Was not a restoration, just a rescue and repair. It did not need alot of work at all (knock on wood) and ran great this weekend.

Update:

This zilla's top end is pretty milked out. Suppose to be the original stock bore. It runs well and starts easy. I am almost afraid to tear it apart. I am also afraid of this piston or thrust washer grenading and causing a bigger mess!!

Anyway - I bought a small reed top end of PCS. I sent it to HPR today for a bore, squish, and o-ring job. Why I didn't send the 87 jug on it, I can't answer that. I feel like its wrong to put this small reed top end on a 87 but it goes with the theme of this quad. Stock "torquey" reliable play/trail quad.

Finally decided to tear the top end down on the Rescue 87 Zilla. Sometimes that's a hard decision to make on a running machine. I knew it had LOW compression but it started and ran pretty good.

Boy am I glad I tore it down. This thing was so close to going BOOM.

I was told this was a original bore machine. False - this piston was 86.50 and is made by Art.

This piston had a major skirt crack on both sides. This was going to go BOOM real soon.

Crack on the other side

The piston pin clip on one side was missing. I believe this is what caused this damage and then either ground up or shot out the exhaust.

Rod and crank appear to be in good shape. I pulled the mag side cover to feel for bearing looseness and found it to be ok. Big end of the Rod was also ok. Whewwwww!! I should be getting my small reed topend from Jerry soon so I can get it ready for the dunes in October

Got around to fixing the worn out steering bushing too.

Nice.  Aren't you glad you didn't start it again?  Is that a cast piston?  Kind of looks like it.

Good thing you tore that thing down and didn't continue riding it. Could've grenaded the **** out of that 87 top end.

Yeah that's a cast piston. I would say one more top speed run and it would have probably blown and caused alot more issues.

 D?

DAMN. That thing was on borrowed time! And the last grain was about to fall through the hourglass! :o :o :o :o

Hmm. Yours has upper arm zerk fittings in the EXACT same place as mine. No mere coincidence. I wonder if a company did that back in the old days?

That same thing happened to mine. I found an original bore that only had rings replaced. Took it out for the first time and after 5 hours of riding the entire rear piston skirt broke off and locked up the crank. I got so lucky there was no damage done to any other parts.

SO FRESH SO CLEAN CLEAN

Spec: 529cc Small Reed 500 Top End Cleaned up by HPR
88.50 Bore w/ Wiseco Piston
Rechambered  O-Ring Head
New Studs in the Cylinder
Billet Thrust Washers and RM Bearing

Just waiting for some O-Rings and Ill be putting this Small Reed project together on the 87 Rescue Project. I will be going to the dunes in a few weeks so I am curious how this little torque monster will compare to the wild child 87 HPR Ported / Q Piped Zilla I have. Should be fun!

I shipped o-rings.  They should have been with the other parts and gaskets.
