I can't really answer that question but when i had my zilla motor done by HPR, he insisted on running the stock Mikuni carb with his mods.....So there must be something to that....But a lot of other shops like Duncan and CT want to switch it out to a keihin.

Duncan likes to use the PWK 39 because it's "Bigger" than the TM-38. The problem is that the PWK cannot be straight bored to a larger size, only taper bored. The TM can be straight bored to over 41 mm. Also the Mikuni has more circuits to fine tune for a better running engine compared to the Keihin.
Mikuni also has more adjustability and is easier to tune than the Keihin.

Jerry takes a stock 88-90 TM38 and mods it.
Of there is also a VM 44 if you're set up to flow enough air.
I used a Duncan Modded Keihin in the past and hated it. Like my modded mikuni much better.
My builder put a Lectron 44 on my LT twenty years ago. I have never liked it. It started easier but never got to its potential. Plus I have no idea how it works
I had Pete Schemberger punch my new 88-90 TM38 to about 41.8mm for my 285. I love it. I had an 87 Tm38 bored to a 42.5 that ran hard but was never quite right due to the slide area of the carb body being worn. The key is to use a nice tight carb what ever the brand.
It really comes down to which you like.
I have ran a TM38, a pwk39, and a vm44 on a zilla. I ran a pwk38 a/s. I will say the a/s is different than the typical pwk.
They are all easy to tune if you have a clue. Many usually just pick a style and stick with it.
Most people tuning will only change out main jet, pilot jet, clip position and adjust air screw. Couple more might change needle, and few more will change something else.
The lectron is great is you know how to use it, if you don't they are a huge

I am still waiting for someone to try the APT smart carb on a zilla, but I think I heard some bad news about the company (like they were shutting down)
I know the guys with the smart Carbs on the big bore trx250r are having issues from the big sphynx, puma, and sabers. Zillafreak where did you see they maybe closing?
The LT500 loves to breath, the more air the better, larger the carb the more performance through out the whole powerband, what ever you go with the 40 to 42mm bored 38 carbs are all around great carbs, the folks running Halls 44s round slides love the power they produce, but they run his whole performance package.
