Time for tires and need opinions.
« on: November 26, 2013, 05:47:52 pm »
Ok guys, It time that I replace my rear tires. I have a set of banshee hubs 4x115 that will be going on, so What I really need is some advice on what size dirt tires I should be looking at getting. I'm new to this 2 stroke thing so I'm not sure how everythign will work out with the gearing.

I mainly ride trails which are rutted and rooted up, and dunes. So could I also get a recomendation on paddle tires as well, I'm not looking to break the bank but I also dont want a crazy amount of wheel spin with out hooking up.

I'm wanting to go with a 10" rear tires unless there are better ideas. and I will also be using the stock 9" rears as the other rim. I'm thinking 9" for paddles and 10" for dirt?

Thanks

ITP Holeshots are GREAT on the trails! I've got a set of 20x10 or 11 for the stock 10" rim and they are great for the trails. Running 13/42 gearing and it'll go up anything it could ever want.

For paddles a good TOUGH paddle with decent bite is a Dune Slider. It's a V-tread and real tough. I've got a set of 21x10-8 on ITP rims. Again 13/42 gearing on the LT, 13/46 on my ATC110. I've yet to trail them but I did tear up a feild with them lol.

You could also look into the Paddle Masters. They are really aggressive but heavy. But very tough from what my uncles told me.

For dirt play, again the Holeshots' or Maxxis Razr's would do really well. The Razr's are way harder. An 18" would be good for non-rutted dirt play but 20's would be best.

Also, Kenda Fast Trekkers are a pretty good tire but they are really hard and it's hard to get them to actually hook

I do enjoy the ITP holeshots that we have on our Z400 That is probably what I will go with if Les Schwabs carries them so I can put them on my account and pay them off slowly-ish.

Also on the LTZ we use ITP sand starts and I'm not too impressed with them to be honest, They work well but it just seams to be a little squirely at times.

One tire that Schwabs is trying to push is the GBC xREX which just like you said about the fast trackers they are a hard tire, great life span but I think I would have problems finding traction with them.

There's also the CST Ambush to consider. They are a cheaper tire but look pretty aggressive. My buddy just put them on his Pschydeli-Shee but he hasn't gotten to run it good yet cause of work

I second the tamers. We've got a buunch of them! I just wished they held air though lol. All our sets are old OG tamers from trikes

this is what i have used for years. best hooking tire imo. i dont like a tall tire. feels like to much roll around corners. i do get high centered on the swinger sometimes. just make sure im going faster and it doesnt happen

Id go with either gbc xrex or kenda kutter.
For snow either the maxis 4 snow or kenda snow mad on the rear.
For hill climbing either 4 snow or we are experimenting with the kenda snow mad and so far liking them better than 4 snow.
Just a little side info we can no longer get pro wedges (same exact thing as 4 snow) from the Honda dealer that's why I didn't say pro wedges ^.

For paddles, I would recommend using an 8x8 wheel such as a Douglas blue label (.125") and some 7-8 paddle Haulers or Edges. Check with Fullerton Sand Sports for pricing.

I have some front and rear ITP GNCC tires on my 450. These have been a great tire. Lots of traction but will still slide when you need too. The fronts work well also.

Previous set was Maxxis I-Rzrs. They worked ok - not alot of traction but only lasted a season of riding.

Sam X-Rex's are discontinued GBC sells the XC master which is very similar to the x-Rex tread pattern. Jason at honda east gets good deals on tires. I got my dads front XC masters 22" for $112

I have no clue about that just when I went to order xrex's from Jason he told me they're discontinued and the xc master was the closest thing from GBC.

I ended up getting a 10" ITP steel rim (inexpensive) and the original 20x11x10 holeshot for tires. So that should be fun when they get here, going on my Les Schwabs account!  (Y)

Worst tire I have ever used was 20x11 holeshots. They bit to hard on the side and wanted to tip my quad rather then slide.  I run 18x10 razr mx. They're my favourite tire.

18" Tires on the Michigan Trail are horrible. Just not enough ground clearance for ruts and obstacles.

You must not have enough motor to break them loose ;D lmao jk jk

My 250 outruns my buddy's predator 500. She's got enough motor haha. Except I had a stock motor with a dg pipe when I had those tires on, not gonna lie though I had more bottom end power with that setup than what I'm running now.

I agree with Chuckie, Thats what we run on our z400 and they have been great tires, even found a nail in one that I patched and its still holding air and perform like a champ, slide when you want it and hook up on anything when you need it. I have been thinking that I should run a little taller tire just because the 400 does slide the rear skid plate in some areas and my lt 250 doesent have a rear skid yet (and its not quite running either)  :'(
