26.5 mile Poker Run
« on: February 17, 2013, 05:10:22 pm »
This is the pre-ride for the Tarantula 100 at Red Sands in Alamogordo, NM. It took me 45 minutes to complete, I edited this video down to 23 minutes. There were roughly 100 dirtbikes there, and only 8 quads: Yamaha Raptor 700 and Raptor 660, Bombardier DS650, my Suzuki LTR450 and two LTZ400's, Honda TRX400X and 300EX. I left all the quads in the dust, I never saw them after we started and didn't see them finish before we left. Not all the dirtbikes started at the same time because there were so many. I did finish behind 12 or 13 bikes, and managed to pass about 10 along the way. One guy wrecked right in front of me, 2 guys broke down and a few guys stopped about half way through.

Great video. Thanks for posting that.  That looks so much fun.  The only thing that would have made it better is if it were me on your quad.

I did the math, average speed was 35mph: mostly 3rd gear, had to put it down to 2nd sometimes and managed to get it into 4th for a few straights. The quad is all stock except the Yoshi Cherry bomb with stock resonator pulled out and homemade sparky inserted, and air box lid removed.

I ride out there alot, just never that long all at once. I did have a camel back on, but never stopped once for water. I have such a bad case of cottonmouth, but I figured I wasn't going to get any thirstier so I kept going. My hands had zero strength that afternoon, and my forearms were like jello that evening. My back killed the next morning.

Yeah, the gate must have been 49" wide, I barely squeezed through. I am actually running the stock Dunlops that came on it.

Red Sands OHV is on hwy 70 about 20 miles outside of Alamogordo heading towards El Paso. It's about halfhway between Alamo and Orogrande, 1 mile before the border patrol checkpoint. You are thinking of Red Dunes in El Paso, it is alot smaller area than Red Sands OHV. White Sands is 6 miles on hwy 54 headed towards Las Cruces, and yes it is off limits to any off-road vehicles/off-roading.

Looks like a desert race, just without the rocks, dust and up/down hills. Great video.

yeah, it's a desert race. It's alot of whooped out soft deep sand, hard packed dirt, rock trails, gravel roads full of mesquite brush on both sides. There is definitely enough dust to go around, makes it hard to pass someone, the closer you get the less you can see. I've hit some big enough whoops that I tripled a section and cleared about 35 feet. I hit a huge whoop that totaled my 250R: broke the steering stem, twisted the handlebars, bent the front right spindle, warped a the front right wheel, ripped the headlight off, **** the rear plastic, lost my flag.
