230 quadsport
« on: March 30, 2015, 04:53:11 pm »
What's a decent 230 quadsport worth ?  They are all over craigslist for $800 to $1100 seems high to me for a 30 year old quad. If it wasn't going to be my kids first quad i could get  another lt250r for that kind of money . I refuse to buy  cheap  Chinese junk you cant get parts for.

I had a 230 way back in the day, they are great quads, never had any trouble with mine, except for when
The clutch started slipping, but a little brake fluid stopped that. lol guess it all depends on how it looks and runs. Got some pics, and those prices are reasonable..

I found  a nice 86 230s quadsport  i got a good deal  on it. It needs normal maintenance  stuff done like new chain and sprocket's  as well as front swing arm bearings and rear brake pads.  rear carrier bearings  are good. I will.also rebuild  the carb and install  a new carb boot .i bought it with a tank full of turpentine it runs real good with the choke on , not so much  without . I ran it just long enough  to short shift it through  the gears to make sure they all work. It wont run again till i go through  it. I will post pics when i have time. It looks good  sitting with my 85 lt250r.  Now i just need a lt500r and a 98 mach  1 and a 98 formula  3. To park next to my 98 mach  z.  Then i might have enough  stuff in the garage  to trip over.

Here's a couple  more pics. I have hours of helmet cam video  but no time to edit. My two son's and i have rode at bull gap in mio mi this year  and silver lake sand dunes. All went great no issues. We're  Planning a couple trips to gladwin trails before we wind down and get sleds ready for snow.

There's nothing  wrong  with  spare parts i wish i had more. I pick up any spare parts i can find for our quads ,our sleds and also any ford performance part from the 60's .  Everytime the price of scrap is on the rise we lose more good parts from people  who don't  know  better or just dont care.. that drives up the cost for all of us who do care about all that old school fun stuff.

You wouldn't by chance happen to have any 427 FE stuff laying around would you?

The 2 86' LT230E's I bought are still on stock bore and they smoked last time the previous owner had em' running.  So I was wondering if I could bore it out to make it a 250cc.  Is it possible to bore it that much?  Also my "MECHANIC" took the carb off it tonight to clean it and ended up breaking the choke part or parts in the carburetor.  So I took off the other carb from the donor quad... he tried to get its choke out in order to fix the other carb...guess what? He effing broke the choke in both carbs. :o  Now I'm wondering if I should buy a bigger carb since I want to bore it.  I'm a collector by nature and I usually try to keep things as original as possible, but I'm 230lb's.  I don't think a 230 has enough power to make it up these steep hills in the Ozarks, MO.  Which is why I want to bore it out.  I have been very busy swapping all the good parts off of the donor and using them parts on the other one.  ;D Is there an aftermarket exhaust for an 86'?  The stock one will do for now but I want more power so the stock one will eventually need replaced.  Also, there is a bolted on plate behind the front sprocket.  Can I take that plate off and be good to go or will transmission parts come out when I remove the plate?  It's held on by 4 bolts.  The plate is broken and needs replaced with the one off my donor 230.  Thing is, I'm having trouble getting the front sprocket retaining nut off so I can remove the plate behind it.  >:D I put the bike in gear held the back brake lever down while I tried turning the sprocket nut, but it just turned the motor over. Do I need to break out my torch and heat that nut up to get it off?  <1> Do I turn the front sprocket nut clockwise or counter clockwise to get it off?  The donor quad has a different spark plug than the other 230.  The donor has a D8EA spark plug and the good 230 has a D7EA.  What spark plug do I need?  I changed the oil and boy was it thick and black as hell.  Once I get the carb installed, I plan on pull starting it to fire up the engine for the first time in a long time. ;D  The question I have is... do I need a battery installed to pull start it?   [|]
