If you have an iPhone just download a free db meter. They're really accurate downloaded this one I pictured and tested it at a car audio shop that has professional sound meters and it was pretty close to right on.

Ive used those.Problem is once it starts going over 100DB the phones mic distorts a lot and for what he wants its going to be higher than that.
