hello, I'm brand new to this forum and also to quads…I've been riding Harleys for years and just picked up a 1987 LT500 for winter/ice use a couple weeks ago, I've been scouring the internet for repair manuals and all I can find is the CD versions on e-bay. Anyone have any experience with the CD manuals? I really prefer a standard book style manual but can't find anything. Clymers website only lists one for the 250. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
What's your email I'll forward you the PDF files that were sent to me. It's the full manual but will come in 4 files and 2 emails.
i have the factory service manual on disc, i can print it for you and send it if needed
hell yeah! that would be awesome…my e-mail is stevenkopp48088@yahoo.com, i'm trying to diagnose a weak spark and have no parameters to work with, it's a lot different than my Harleys! Got some fresh snow today and am hoping to get it running right by the weekend ice-races on the lake. Thanks a ton! really appreciate the help.
take the stator cover off,
black/red to black/white = 376 ohm
blue to black/white = 120ohm
look at top of stator bracket you will see a stamp mark and then look on case you will see a arrow head
make sure they are lined up straight. check ground for rust or bad connection, or any
**** wires. and if you up plug
key switch bike will still start.
great..is the stator a common problem? I had it running the other day, was warming it up in the garage and it just "shut-off" kicked it until my arch was black & blue, spark was very weak. It appears to have a newer coil, so i'm thinking the stator isn't sending enough juice to the coil. was strange that it started on the second kick stone-cold in 20 degree weather, but died when warm and won't re-start…i'm hoping the CDI didn't crap out, Ive only owned it a week! I'm thinking this issue was plaguing the previous owner and why he was so eager to make a deal. Naturally, the douche won't return my calls now.
how did it run when you started it, was it reving on its own, if so you may have a air leak. you should do this test to be safe.
you dont want to lean out bike. pull plug and see how it looks what color is it, dark is rich very light brown is lean, you want a paper bag look.
i would check ground on frame first. then check wires that come from bottom of stator cover for cracks or rash from the chain.
check ohms and make sure stator is lined up. make sure air filter is clean.
now here is how most of us start a zilla.
from cold motor
pull choke leave off, turn on gas kick over motor a few times. this will prime fuel system
turn on bike
roll motor over with kicker till you hit 2nd hard spot with the kicker, try to have it at top then kick fast.
do this every kick, roll it over till you get 2nd hard spot with kicker. might need to give it a burp on the thrtl 1 time, but if it runs
it will start that way, plus it save your foot.
I sent the PDF files for the manual let me know if you don't receive them.
THANKS A TON! just came in from shoveling and checked, REALLY appreciate it, hopefully will be on the ice this weekend!
just wanted to give a HUGE thanks for the help…bad stator, runs like a beast! just in time for the weekend on the ice!
