I've had my 87 sitting in my garage for several years, too busy to fix it and too many other projects ahead of it. I traded an old 87 J arm Banshee it a long time ago. Anyway, it started popping out of second gear, so I parked it, this past weekend, I ripped it apart and found what I expected, worn dogs and a bad fork.
Any ideas on isotropic(CRYO-REM) treating the gears? I pondered the idea of getting the gears back cut, RC's or Evans Performance for the isotropic, the back cutting worries me because your removing the surface hardening from the dogs 5* is going to remove the .020 deep surface hardening. Anyway, CRYO is more of a stress relieving process, yes it does convert martensite, but we have never seen any proof of anything being more durable with just CRYO treatment alone outside of aluminum, but combined with ISF, it seems to be worthwhile.

Unless you can get the gears new or mint shape undercutting is the only choice. Yes it removes material I have never had any issue I ve been running a back cut trans for 8+ years. Just have to get it done rite and on a gear set that's not too far gone.

Who cut yours, or who do you trust? I've done some looking and most of the places cater towards the sport bike crowd and want an arm and a left nut to do it, I found one plce that just back cuts the gears, no treatment process outside of shot peening, they're name is RC's Performance.

Pete at Hybrid Engineering as well....
I think Q had a post on FB blasting Bob for ripping him off for a few customers' bottom ends a few weeks back if I remember correctly?

Do you have contact info for Pete? I searched and found no contact info on Hybrid Engineering other than an environmental engineering firm and I doubt that is him...lol

Why not back cut, Then send out to CRYO?
I used 300 below but that was years ago. I would send them every part but the rubber. Same price as 2 parts.
I have a Rockwell Test Machine in the shop, never got around to testing how much the CRYO helped each part. My guess, new never ran part, well used parts in both steel and aluminum would not see the same gain (CRYO same part new vs used). But nice bump the right way in both

All my trans that have been cut by Bob have worked perfect. I haven't used him in a while but I have no issues sending him work.

Do you have either Pete's or Bob's contact info, I've searched for the names and haven't found anything on either of them, I did find a number for Pete, but I guess it's an old number because it was not working, found it on a TRX forum.

Had my low end back cut by mike 500 fanatic or rxhp if he does mikes work and he was super reasonable and I was very happy. Been running his set up for 4 yrs with no issues smooth shifts and no jumping out of gears under power.

Whitaker Custom Racing also does back cut and cryo. I have had good luck with my transmission.

When I first started looking at back cutting the gears, WCR came up quite a bit, after doing some searching I found where he has numerous legal issues pertaining to theft of property, I can't really take a chance like that, if parts were plentiful, then it wouldn't be a big deal.

Not knocking any of these guys but, wcr is supposed to be the shop to deal with on the gears. No middle man to pay. Plus it's about 100 bucks cheaper when you deal with them.
And from the looks of the pic, your gonna need more then tranny gears cut,, where's the rest of the bike. Lol

Mike Steiner built my engine but I had him send the gears to WCR due to time constraints and possible delays with the others doing the work. Mike said the work from WCR looked great and I have had no problems with the transmission.
I have heard all good things about the guys mentioned in this thread except MHR. I was just throwing out another option.

Nopick, check out planet sand and LS1tech, looks like he had some very unhappy customers.
GrkGuy, it's all there, just was getting dark and started boxing everything up after i got the engine out and the top end off. I split the case and removed the bad gears. I have the head off my Banshee too, low compression in the left cylinder, everything I have is broken right now...lol

Interesting. A lot of the posts on Planet Sand were before I had the work done and some of them are after. There were quite a few posters that had no trouble mixed in there as well. Maybe he has some problems keeping up with backlog or something. I had no problems.

Bob was really slow back in the day. I remember him keeping bottom ends for 6 months + at a time. Some 1 year or more. I talked with 500Fanatic about it and he claims that Bob always got his work done quick. So i guess Bob puts builders work ahead of people that just call him up and send them in. WCR may be your best option without going through a middle man. Personally, i've never heard a bad thing about them but that doesn't mean they dropped the ball on some work.

Well last time I bought something from Bob I had to re-purchase it because he sent me the wrong parts and every time I've called him he screens his calls (must be a reason for this). Hes given me an uneasy feeling in the past plus the guy who originally did the engine I now run, had the works done by Bob and somethings had to be re-done very shortly after.
Not sure if Mike Steiner does the gears himself, if he does he probably does a good job as he does top notch work. If he sends things out I wouldn't trust it so much.
Pistol Pete Schemberger of Hybrid Engineering; have not heard that name in a while, not sure if he's stilling doing 500 stuff or not but I believe he worked out of his garage in between his 9-5. Can't remember hearing anything bad about him though. He was getting in to a lot of the drag stuff, CPI, Liger stuff with the Chris and Big Jim.
I had mine done by Greg at WCR and he polishes and cryos the parts when done. Price should be reasonable about $200. He does use a mill (not by hand or eyeball) and seems to know what he's doing. This is my 4th season about 100 hours and no issues, in fact the more I ride it the better it works.
Greg or his "wife" did how ever misplace my package and it took about a week extra to get it back after calling him a bunch when it didn't show up on time.
Seems like a decent guy and parts came back done right and working good. Plus I know 3 or 4 other guys who all have WCR trannys and haven't had major issues; Bad Moon, El Diablo, Me, No Pick, and I think a few others
X2 on WCR as long as you follow up with him.

When Mike Steiner built my engine, he was going to send the gears to Bob. He said turn times were highly variable from Bob. That is why I went with WCR.

I sent my stuff to WCR. He had great communication with me. Only problem was when one of the gear shafts broke his polishing machine. It took about an extra week to get my tranny back since he had to buy a replacement drum for his machine.

I'm waiting on some new gears to show up before I make a decision, I plan on getting one of my Banshee transmissions cut with whoever does my Zilla trans. I just want to make sure I choose the right person, I understand things happen and we are all susceptible to the issues that life tends to throws at us. I would rather send my parts to someone that's going to do a good job and has a good reputation with customers, I got burned bad years ago by a guy in Ga. on some Mustang parts, you can never be too cautious...
