Expert eyes on my pre-Glamis LT500 checklist
« on: January 16, 2014, 07:12:15 am »
OK I've been visiting the forums for a few months after buying my 1989 LT500 last July. After the purchase I had the top end done. New 86.5mm Wiseco piston and my buddy did a bit of mild porting. Stock TM38mm carb rebuilt (new valve needle). Also did new steering wheel bushings and SB Designs lower bushing. New rear shock bearing kit. Went to a 13 tooth front sprocket from the 12 it had. New (used) fmf full exhaust removing the stock it had ($63 off ebay!). All fluids changed couple seals (clutch and kick). It had V2 reeds already.
I'm hoping to get a case saver (SBLT check your messages!).
I had this out in the Oklahoma dunes for a few days and it ran great.  I ran a foam filter with a 22.5 slow and 350 main and the Plug looked good.
I just really hated the airbox.
So I bought one and put in the SB clamp on adapter kit (which I have NOT put in yet). I also ordered an AEM filter (One that fits in the airbox) along with a pre-filter and will run with the air box lid OFF. So as of right now I put in a 25 slow jet and a 420 main to start. I won't run it until I get to Glamis and will check the plug immediately (Cold and too much snow in WI). My only thought is if I should actually start fatter on the main. I'd love to hear from someone that has a pretty stock bike as to what their main is at with the lid off.

Taking it to our 4th annual Glamis trip in a couple weeks and it will be my 1st on a 2 stroke. Just looking for things to make the trip as break down free as possible. I would love feedback on things I'm missing or should try to do prior to the trip.

I've got a couple days lined up in a heated garage to get the airbox mod, nerf bars I got from Dennis Kirk (last pair they had), case saver and a TTO temperature gauge installed.

I bought a spare airbox and have it done - just got to get it in the bike now. Here is a picture of the AEM filter vs. a K&N

looks like you're about there.  I need to get back out to Glamis.  Was incredible fun!

a mostly stock 89 with a high-flo filter and an FMF pipe will prolly need about a 380 main but it's always good to start fat at you stated.  25 pilot sounds about right.  You'll prolly need to adjust the air mixture screw a bit to get the idle perfect.

While you're at glamis, test your needle height as well (half throttle plug chops).

Have fun - seriously jealous here.

Seriously though - make sure every nut and bolt is tight. Too many times its something stupid that falls off or creates havoc. These thing buzz and vibrate so do a good inspection.

A PRM six pack rack is nice to carry a spare gas can or cooler. Also some sort of pack with some tools, spare plugs and such.

Yea that rack has been on my radar for some time (but what rack isn't!  ;D)
But this trip has me taxed and I just can't afford another $200 (or should I say if UPS shows up again my wife my shoot them or me!)
Looks like a big Gatorade bottle in my backpack will have to work for spare gas!!!
