The washer on the bolt have rubber on them 1 has it on both side and he other has just the one side. If the rubber is gone off the washers it will weep out of weep hole. I replaced mine still leaked. So boughtt another seal. Replaced and still leaked. Then I finally realized the washer had rubber and mine were missing it. So replaced the washers never have had a problem since.

Wait are you talking about the little pinhole near the drain plug?

I thought it had to do with the impeller shaft seal. I could be wrong, I'm new to these weird-ass bikes.

Iirc Jerry hall mentioned to shorten the impeller shaft so the bolt can tighten down on the impeller/washer more. As the parts wear the impeller becomes loose probably taking out the rubber on the washer. But I'm not 100% on that....

I replaced all the seals in my 500 water pump and it still cried. You have to do what Dez said Jerry recommended. Remove the impeller bolt washers and impeller and grind off a few thousandths of an inch of material from the impeller shaft (the shaft is what the impeller mounts on and the bolt and washers go into you're grinding off surface area where the bolt hole is at). If you don't do this you will need to replace the mechanical seal impeller shaft and impeller to stop the crying. When you reinstall the impeller bolt make sure you use red loctite (I forgot this step and the bolt backed out and my impeller grinder a nice reminder in the back side of my water pump cover).

when you put water pump back together, you should put a little rtv on the reverse thread bolt that holds the
impeller on,

and what ever you do, DO NOT PLUG HOLE...

Also make sure you did not put the rubberized washer on backwards.

And yes put some locktite on the impeller bolt so it goes not come out.  If it does come out you won't know it until it's too late.

May be just me but by grinding down the end of the water pump shaft does absolutely nothing to the force being applied to the mechanical seal. There is a machined area on the shaft itself and the impeller can only travel down the shaft so far. You could cut 3/16" off the shaft and it wouldnt do anything. Something else is wrong if everything has been replaced and its leaking. My zilla was just doing this and I made sure the mech. seal was fully seated by giving it a few more hits with a socket and hammer. My ceramic washer was gouged pretty good so i replaced it and no more leaks. The material missing from the ceramic washer could have caused an uneven amount of force to be applied to the mech seal or the seal wasnt seated properly. Just my two cents.

When I had to replace my water pump assembly the impeller had radial play, in other words the impeller needed to be bolted down tighter. The aluminum impeller mounting hole has a flat spot that had developed/worn allowing the extra play clockwise an visa versa. This is only my opinion and not to diss anyone, I believe that doing Jerry recommendation would help. But I did not perform that mod (I didn't hear of the mod until after I replaced everything) and my pump worked as designed. When the fisherman was doing the dyno runs his water pump was leaking, after tightening down the impeller bolt it stopped and we were able to complete the runs. I am not an expert on this so please do not take my post as an insult to anyone

I'm no expert either on how what Jerry recommended works all I know is I did it and my water pump doesn't weep anymore. What you recommended stpltn250r is a great suggestion and I think something that should be checked while you have it apart and performed if needed but replacing the mechanical seal isn't necessary in all cases I don't believe. Like I said before I'm far from an expert just sharing what I learned that fixed my problem and didn't cost me anything to try.
