Is that a bolt missing in this picture?

On the side of the motor, is a little circular glass window held on by what appears as four bolts, but 1 is missing. Can you fill me in on what this glass window is for? Part number for the missing bolt?

That's the powervalve actuator sight glass. If it's clean and you look close, you should seethe linkage move when you rev up your motor. The bolt is just a 6mm bolt about 14-16mm long. Get ya a bolt kit off amazon. They are like $40. Get a clymer manual too. $35ish.

I will do. I already have a clymers for my 86', but you're right, I do need one for the 88'.

Just stay away from stainless steel bolts.

It's actually called a Exhaust Valve not a Powervalve.

Yeah crusty. Glad u caught the quote. I think that was Billy Bob Thorntons best role ever. I haven't watched it in yrs. Im gonna go see if the library has a copy, and while I'm there I'm gonna try to get some of my pics uploaded on here.

 There are many different grades of steel and stainless steel bolts.  Most stainless steel bolts are not as strong as steel bolts especially the Chinese bolt kits that are all over ebay. 

Stainless steel bolts are usually used in environments where corrosion is a problem.  I cannot remember  seeing a stainless steel bolt used where strength is a high priority.  I have never seen connecting rod bolts, main bearing cap bolts, head bolts, head studs,  wheel studs, etc. use stainless where high strength is required.  If strength and corrosion are design requirements, stainless steel bolts usually have to be a larger diameter than high strength steel bolts carrying the same load.


Stainless steel bolts are prone to thread galling and stripping threads when used with a stainless steel nut or threaded hole made of a similar material.

^ Thanks for this info.  I was unaware and thought that stainless was the way to go.  I got a zinc kit a couple years back but the quality is probably still the same Chinese quality to be expected on ebay...

I just bought 2 quadracer bolt kits from amazon. Pretty good quality shiny zinc plated. Havnt had any problems yet. Not OEM but close enough for me and my wallet. Not too pricey either. Mostly just has the small stuff in it. No high strength bolts. Pretty much just for the plastic and what not. Had some screws for the carb, and stuff. No swingarm bolts or brake disk stuff, no motor mount stuff or internal fasteners. But it's good to have around anyway.
