1986 250r Base gasket leak
« on: February 12, 2015, 12:28:09 am »
Ok guys after adjusting clutch I now have this issue. The bike is hard to start and I tried for 2 days straight trying to kick start it. I figured it was flooded since there was a strong smell of gas. Finally decided to pull start it and it ran fine even started right back up after. However, I noticed that it was leaking Coolant from the front of the cylinder base gasket. Right where cylinder meets bottom end. It's not on the intake side that it's leaking it right beneath the pipe. Previous owner said it had a rebuilt top end that he broke in. I checked specs on the nuts and they  are tightened down to spec. Now my question is do I have to remove the cylinder head as well just to replace the base gasket or can I remove the whol cylinder with cylinder head still on cylinder? Thanks.

Hold up so its leaking at the base gasket? Not the head? I would honestly take both of those apart and take off the cylinder.. Clean up the gasket edges real nice, check out your rings, dome and piston.. Put in new gaskets and torque down to specs!! Should be gtg man

I know it seems like a lot of taking apart but just cause somebody says they just rebuilt the top end with all new gaskets and seals everythings good to go.. Technically that don't mean **** cause what if they didn't do it right? Didn't put the bearings in correct or what if the inserts are super worn, gasket areas are all tore up? What i'm sayin is ya never know whats on the inside!! Gotta open her up to see for yourself!! Shop manual will help a ton and take pics with your phone to help put back together!! Also zip lock baggies and a marker help a ton!! Label everything in regards to the manual on your baggies!! Also ask for help if you can and if you need quick response just pm me. I get the response to my phone.

correct its leaking at the base gasket not the head. Leak is in between the two front nuts where the bottom end meets the cylinder right under the pipe. Its weird because I rode the bike for about 15 min and then I noticed the leak. The bike ran great and had good power. I will take it apart and clean everything up, install new gaskets and torque to specs. Any one know where I can find base gasket for a good price?

Oh yea replace that guy and make sure to clean up your gasket surfaces real good with a light scotch bright pad or something similar and some wd-40. Also for gaskets i think ya can check ebay or i seen on here to make your own base gasket from some material from autozone

FYI unless the power valve cavity is full of coolant your leak is elsewhere. Most likely the head and running down. Base gasket usually won't show up there because there no coolant in that area.

I can see it leaking from the base gasket. The head gasket is fine. I can see when the bike is on it is slowing leaking out from base gasket. my next question is do I have to remove the cylinder head in order to remove the whole cylinder .

Well if its leaking from there then you should already be taking things apart and prolly not running that bike you could develop an air leak and that will make things worse.. Here's the steps you should take
Shop manual, take off head clean surfaces, new gasket, cylinder off, clean gasket areas, new gasket with Yamabond, or something similar, inspect all other components while those two are off.

And while the top end is apart, I would send the the head off to get the squish angle corrected then hone the cylinder & replace the rings, just so that you don't have to tear it back apart to do it separately down the road.

Ok guys sorry for continuous questions. But are the 85-86 base gaskets different than 87-92? Also would any rm250 base gaskets fit the 85-86 models
