Engine upgrades to improve durability, reliability...
« on: September 14, 2013, 11:16:23 am »
What kind of things can I do to my 88' engine to make it more reliable, durable?im going to have iceracer do squash milling. Already ordered thrust washers and 99'rm250 bearings. Would adding a port job make it last any longer?

From what I've seen of iceracer on here, the dude knows his S*^%.
I'm sure if he's doing your headwork, I'd go ahead and have him check your ports and do as he pleases with them. Whatever he gives ya, will probably be a good combination that he's used before with good reliabilty. Every part in that top end works together as a system. It's the combination of these things that brings power and reliability.... If that makes sense

I should. I may just send him my whole motor and tell him not to send it back until its broken in. Lol give him complete freedom to do all those little things which would add up. I'll have to ask him how much he would charge to do just this. Thanks for the idea.

Also, I got real lucky, I found one parts bike with good frame, suspension, and plastic,
Then I found another parts bike with a good engine and a bad frame. If u just wanna ride while your serious motor is being built, try to find a parts bike witha running engine. It's a solid investment if u get it cheap enough. Then you can always have a running motor ready to go when work is being done on another, plus you'll have plenty of extra parts. I gave $650 for the bad frame/good motor, and $340 for the good frame bad motor. The $340 one was a great deal that I got really lucky on. I had some work done on the rear shock, then I bought all new bearings for the dogbone, shock linkage and swingarm. I also bought a rad racing billet carrier and bearings(tough to install, but bad ass) I've got about $1200 invested all together, and been rippin up the trails for most of the mornin. I do plan on sinking at least a grand in my other motor tho

Already own a 86 that has a ton of issues. I'll fix the 88' first cause it has less, then 86'

box stock engine, grab the best pipe you can afford, get some nice reeds, air filter for your environment (sand or dust) and jet that bad boy! There is more to it than chasing a port job. I was there once. Had to get kicked in the balls a few times to realize sometimes you just want to ride the damn thing.

If you're after good work. Ice racer, FloTek, Tony at T&R, Tudors still does some work on the 250's, surprisingly enough there is a large following if you can find them.  2c

Well it's official! Iceracer will be building my motor this month. Shipping it to him once I get off this computer. Now lets just hope this engine I send him isn't completely junk. I'd hate to have to buy another and have him build it. UNLESS it is a 500!

Awesome man! You deserve that and more for your services in the military. I been workin crazy OT lately. Hopefully this payday my wife will approve my parts list so I can get to ordering!! I'm taking pictures like crazy, but it literally takes me like 20minutes to upload 1. I'm just gonna take photos through my whole build and post them all when finished.

We'd love to see them. I just removed upper and lower a arm bearings,  and they were trashed. In fact I think some of it was missing. Once I get the front end put back together, I'm going to load the four wheeler into my wife's van and take it to get the frame and swinger fixed. I'm hoping to have everything ready by the time iceracer sends me back the motor in November.

I loved my 86' model. I'll never get rid of it. I took it through some very suprisingly deep mud! If i doubted it, id just crack it open and let it eat sh!t. I did some pretty serious hill climbing in it too. Kind of scary sometimes cause I ran a stock swinger.  I was good as long as I kept the rpm's up, and I had geared down sprockets. This 88' model i just got will be my special occasion quad, and then I can just drive around my 86' everyday.  I think it's probably a good idea to have someone look over the 86' motor before I get it back on the road.
