The key is what locates the flywheel into the proper location for proper timing. If the flywheel moved position on the crankshaft it will change the timing. If the timing is too far advanced it can run in reverse. A 2 stroke doesn't care wich way its turning as long as the piston is going up and down. I would check the groove in the crankshaft to make the keyway isn't boogered up.
