I have the opportunity to pick up a cool head and dome for my lt250r build for a decent price. Are they worth the money? I understand it is a little more versatile than having my stock head shaved and squish set. What are the real advantages? Those that run them, how often do you really change the domes? I am assuming that by changing the domes, the need for changing to higher octane fuel would be needed? These are new to me as I had my stock zilla head o-ringed and squish set by HPR and never went down this road. Thanks for any insight.
80 % of the time a used cool head dome is not correct for the build. Its the wrong cc has been cut too much etc. The other 10 % of time the shell is worn. And the dome sits flat to the shell. Unless its a smoking deal or you know its good and the rite dome. Your going to spend 40 bucks for a new dome. And your so close to new price its not worth it.
Biggest benefit of them is versatility. Like ken said if you waste a piston. Its only the dome not the shell too.
If you have a good clean head to work with now its not a huge benefit.

I was interested in the comment I have heard a few time now about the coolheads being too efficient and overcooling the engine

Do I need to use a restrictor in the water hose?
No there no more efficient really than a OEM head. The difference is there cut a little better off the shelf at stock bore, so you could see a temp drop in the rite condition. Don't restrict anything in the hose. If you want to do something plug the head to mimic the OEM gasket if you running orings. Its possible to get a hot spot on the head but I've done a lot and never seen an issue.
