86 QR shifting issue
« on: November 16, 2015, 08:56:36 am »
Hello everyone, been a lurker for a while but I'm posting now for some help/opinions.
My 86 QR will not consecutively up shift successfully. When I shift up the shifter will not return to center to allow the shift star mechanism to grab the next slot in the shift drum. If I push the shifter back down slightly I can feel it click a tiny bit and then I can shift upwards again.
I'm leaning towards it being the shift shaft return spring being bad.  However when I was puting thing together that spring actually felt pretty strong. Would a bent shift shaft cause this?
Thanks

For anyone wondering, it ended up being the shift shaft causing the problem. The tab at the end that the spring ends go on either side of (next to the shift pin) was worn and allowed too much slop so the spring could not return it to static position
