1986 Suzuki LT250R QuadRacer Tuning
« on: November 12, 2012, 04:44:45 pm »
Hello all, new member looking for some advice.

I recently purchased a 1986 Suzuki LT250R QuadRacer. The previous owner brought it from California and mainly used it at Glamis. I am stationed at Holloman AFB near Alamogordo, NM. My avarage elevation and riding temperature is 4,300' above sea level and 65 degrees.

He replaced the original 34mm Mikuni with a Keihin PJ36 and I have no idea where to begin with the jetting so I can fine tune it.
- UNI filter
- FMF Fatty Gold pipe
- FMF TurbineCore spark arrestor
- Boyesen reeds

When I took the carb off to tear it down and clean it I noticed it had a 62 pilot jet and a 158 main jet. The needle jet was clipped on the 3rd clip from the top (middle) and the air screw was 1-1/4 turns out. He also had the wrong spark plug in it, I put the stock NGK B8EGV. I also drained the tank and put fresh 91 octane at 35:1 premix in.

I have been doing some research online and a 45 pilot with a 160 (varies from 152-168) main jet, and 1.5 turns out on the air screw is pretty common. Right now I have a 48 pilot and a 158 main jet in, needle clipped on 2nd ring from the top and the air screw at 1-5/8 turns out. This carb has the idle incorporated in with the choke knob, which has 9 full turns of adjustment. It will not idle unless you set it for 8-1/2 turns CCW.

1. Will dropping down to a 42 pilot help my idle issues?
2. should I put a 162 main jet in before I start my plug chops?

I am pretty sure the needle is good, revs quickly, doesn't bog.

How worn is the slide and needle jet?

Not sure on 85-86, but all 87-92 250's and 87-90 500's have a black coated slide. If the black is worn off it is junk. I'm not talking about the needle, the needle jet. The the needle slide's into it and the main jet threads into the bottom. They will wear out, if so it's very difficult to get it to idle and start.

I worked TA, MHU-196's, QA, VCNCO/AFDPM, TAS Monitor/CTK Custodian, WRM manager/Equipment Custodian, UDM, BEAR Base, UFPM/PTL, Instructor, Distance Learning/E-Test Proctor and SABC/CPR Faculty. I have been stationed at Barskdale (3 yrs), Kadena (4 yrs), Minot (3 yrs) and Osan (1 yr). I have been TDY to Nellis twice and deployed to Iraq.
