Hey guys, burned a piston and broke the intake bridge on my HRD cylinder. I'm looking at my options now and I'm hunting around for a running/working cylinder with piston to get me rolling again as cheaply as possible.

Can be stock, no porting, no re-enforced ears, etc.... just want to have a usable cylinder and matching piston to bolt my engine back together while saving for a resleeve on my HRD cylinder.

So guys... what do you have available?

Because I was stupid. Mixed up using 110 fuel with 91 fuel in two different cans. Didn't use a sharpie to write on the cans. WILL NOT DO THIS AGAIN! With the HPR19 Pipe I could not hear the detonation going on unfortunately.

That sucks. So how did the engine look otherwise you were concerned about rust with the Dominator oil?

I figure I had about 100 hours on the topend. Compression was down a little, but was still around 185lbs.

No signs of rust. I've been running the Dominator for over 2 years now, so now I feel better about running the Dominator.

100 hours maybe it was not the gas...I have to replace my piston every 35 hours to prevent this from happening.

Do you have an hour meter Larry?

Yes, I ran an hour meter for a while, then switched over to the vapor. No, I'm sure I switched up my fuel cans since my generator was burning race fuel! My cylinder was still in great shape before this last weekend. Decent compression and no wear when looking at the piston thru the intake and exhaust. So far I'm impressed with the Amsoil Dominator oil. I've increased my ratio from 50:1 to 40:1 to make sure I have good lubrication.

send it to nw sleeve like 300 will get you up and running plus piston. they do fantastic work like 2 week turnaround

The 88+ 89mm bore cylinder would of been perfect. I again would of worried about the intake bridge since the sleeve in that area is now very thin. Great price though.

The 87 cylinder would of been OK, but I would of really been knee capped running that. Have to use the OEM intake since my 88+ VF2 intake would not bolt in.

NWSleeve quoted me the following:

1 Labor$160
2 Sleeve$120
3 Port match $75
4 Wiseco piston $154.95

So I'm looking at the minimum $510 for a new sleeve from NWSleeve.

I sent my cylinder and head off to HPR (Motorgeek) and they will be re-sleeving it. While I don't want to drop too much money on the fix, I don't want to take any shortcuts either. My cylinder is HRD ported, so the new sleeve has to be port matched on top of the labor of installing the sleeve in the first place. Instead of port matching to the old sleeve / cylinder porting, he is going to blend my HRD cylinder port to his HPR porting since I'm running his pipe. Also, if I went the NWSleeve route, it would be a std piston with no mods. I figure Jerry is one of the 500 guru's on the planet, and my cylinder repair is in good hands.

Jerry uses a thicker sleeve so when you are on the last bore, the intake bridge is not paper thin. I was only on an 87 bore, but the extra heat caused my intake bridge to snap like a twig.

While my updated cylinder will not be ideal, I'm hoping it will give me a tad more power

Wow, this would be great twinzilla. I wanted to buy a second one anyway for backup.

Are you sure that you would be willing to sell that little gem for only $200?

If so, I'LL TAKE IT! I figure, it would be another part to always have with me (spare cylinder) just in case one of our group of 500's burn down in the dunes.

Rogue, when I first picked up my '89 500, it had the Duncan Eliminator porting package. One of the things they did was completely remove the intake bridge. It ran pretty good but when I wanted more, I took it to Jerry. He did make it clear that he did not recomend this procedure but also blended his dune porting to the previous port job. I'm still on the same piston & ring after almost 2 years of hard riding with no loss of compression.

Brian that is impressive! I'm afraid with my HRD porting and no intake bridge it leaves around a 33% or so opening for the intake area. That can't be good on a piston/rings. I'd rather have the bridge in there then to run without one. It would always be in the back of my mind.... so we'll call it peace of mind with the resleeve.
