Well, I've decided to cut up yet another 85-86 frame. This one is going to take quite a bit longer than the RM/LT took. Starting out with this spare frame that hasn't sold, so I will be needing everything. Plans are to narrow the front clip, use my own +3 +1 arms that I'm buildding for the 85-86, and do the same 87+ shock relocation that I built for my brid. Now for the engine.. Not really sure which direction I'm going there. At the moment, its a toss up between KTM 300, or Husky WR 250.

I've been throwing around the idea of narrowing the front on one of my frames and running z400 arms on it. I've got a idea of how I want to do it but as I've learned thru the years it's good to see how others do the same thing and build upon your own ideas.

I'm still thinking keeping it as LT long travel arms. Narrowing the frame will reduce the bump steer, and making new tabs for the knuckles to correct the Ackerman is my plan. Other than the engine and frame mods, I want to keep it all LT. WITH a fliptop rear of course

I've been throwing around the idea of narrowing the front on one of my frames and running z400 arms on it. I've got a idea of how I want to do it but as I've learned thru the years it's good to see how others do the same thing and build upon your own ideas.
Well your in luck lol my buddy and I fitting a z400 front clip onto my 86 frame. Its gonna be a little tough as the top does not even come close to being the same, but I have an idea. I will be starting a build thread soon with MANY pics of everything.

Ok, so over the next few months, I will be looking for either YZF426, or KTM EXC300. Huskys look to be way too difficult to get parts for, and more expensive than KTM LOL

I've rode a 426 and I loved it really torquey motor and pretty snappy I thought, heavy bike so I'm sure it will push the frame around great, I don't know anythingboot the ktm though

426 or crf450. I've ridden a fresh KTM300 dirtbike and power was unsatisfying to me on the bike. Add a couple pounds, lose a couple horses. Honda engine parts are dirt cheap compared to most other liquid cooled 4 stroke engines and the power stock is broad enough to carry the extra weight. Check out the walsh crf hybrid ltr that Cody Gibson rides. Saw it in person several times with a few different riders and it's very dominate out of the gate and smooth.

Mainly, I'm most concerned with price. I can find 426's easily within a 400 mile radius for under 2 g's. The CRF is consistently above 2500-4500. I really like the 426 and the ease of building a pipe without having to deal with an expansion chamber.

Yes pipe wise 4 chokes are cheaper but rebuild wise 2 stroke as we all know is the way to go

Rebuild won't occur nearly as often though. The way I ride, its maiinly trail riding, I can easily putt putt with my sons, and it should last an easy few years. Really only going to be getting into it on the rare occasion when I go to play on the track.

Why do you wanna put a Z clip on an 85/86? Why do you want a KX125? Cause I want to. That's why!! LOL

1. because I was going to widen it anyways
2. way better front brakes, especially since dual piston yfz ones can bolt up to it then too
3. better geometry up front=better handling
I don't want my kx125 anymore im going to put it back together and sell it.
If your gonna do a hybrid like that why not use a better motor

As far as I have seen, the YFZ is a DAMN good motor.. Low to mid 40's in hp right out of the box, and a really broad torque curve. Plus, the carburetor is still more pleasing to me than the FI CRF450. I don't want to deal with that much electronics.
On the suspension, I still believe that its not the arms, spindles and shocks that are the problem on the stock LT, its the steering geometry and width of the frame. Narrow the frame, and use +3 or even build +4 arms and make the proper tabs for the knuckles to correct the Ackerman. Its going to work plenty sweet!

I'm fixing all of that with the z400 front clip. Oh ya and I forgot HUGE suspension upgrades lol. Those LT pogo sticks are not very comfy.

]i have a 91 250 with +2 arms, elka shocks,yfz front hubs,and 4-1 wheels. also a steering stabalizer. it rides just as good as my buddies 250r lrd frame.maybe not as much travel but very comfortable in the woods. to me it seems pointless and really expensive to redesign the whole front end when there are parts for the lt to make them nice. are u guys pro racers that ride 365 days a year? just curious to why u would want to spend so much time and money on something thats not going to be used to its full potential when there are parts available to fix everything u guys complain about. factory shocks are gonna suck regardless of brand. thats why they make aftermarket

I agree with you but........ I'm a fabricator by trade with what amounts to a fab shop at home. I enjoy tinkering and modifying. I'm one of those people that build rather than buy.

now i can understand that. i also understand a guy that races for a living. dont get me wrong, i kicked around the idea of a bartlett racing front end too. but i got to thinking about all the extra labor and parts u have to buy. just not worth it to me cause i dont do it for a living. why not save the $ and just buy what is available. if u think u are going to buy stock 400 arms and shocks and its all better, u are wrong. i guess thatsa my point im trying to get across. ive rode 400s and they dond handle any better than the stock lt.

?? I am also doing it because I got the WHOLE front clip (minus rims) for $250 that's super cheap and my buddy is a professional welder/fab (he put a cbr motor in a warrior) so why would I not do this ??
I also enjoy tinkering and modifying so this is the perfect project for me? It's not pointless at all since I have all the resources and can do it fairly cheap. 100% worth it to me and it's gonna fix everything I want it to. Sooo
