Hey again.....
Had the 500R out for a nice rip yesterday.... Mid ride I noticed I was leaking engine oil, on the left side of the engine... From what I can tell it's coming from the shifter shaft seal. I'm curious to know how big of a job it is to change this seal... Does the motor need to come out & case's split? Or can I pull the clutch cover & puch the shift shaft in enough to get @ the seal?
I'm just curious as to what i'm getting myself into! LOL

I just did this on mine. I used a hooked angled tool like the dentist scrapes on your teeth with to remove the old seal the slid the new seal over the shaft and pressed it into place with a flat surfaces box end punch like tool. Took all of 10 mins and didn't disassemble anything with exception of removing the shifter.
Get the old one out with anything you can a hooked too works best like buckeye said and put oil on the seal and shaft and use a socket and hammer and should go right in
^^ that would've been a better idea them me using two flat ended like press punch tools lol. It's pretty quick and easy though either way.
Yeah sockets have always worked for me.they always seem to be just a lil smaller than the seal which works great and have the hole already in it.they with great to get broken pieces out to.just drill and tap the broker piece and run a bolt through the socket and tighten it and it usual pops the piece right out.

1st... Thnx for the info guys. I'm glad to hear that the shift shaft seal is a fairly "quick & easy" fix.......
However after further inspection the issue seems to be the "drive shaft sprocket seal" (i think that's what it's called)... From what I can tell from a parts microfiche possible part # 09283-35023, OIL SEAL (35X45X6).
I cleaned it all down nice nice with some brake cleaner & rags. I idled it for a few minutes... NO leak, So I gave it a little rip around the yard and it seems to be leaking down form the "drive shaft sprocket seal".. oil is nice and clean, no leak when bike is NOT running.
I'm assuming the cases are gonna need to be split for this......?
Any "quick tips" for this fix? LOL

Did a little more "digging" on the site... Apparently no need to pull the motor, or split the cases!
Here's the fix i found from an 250R post
"remove the sprocket and spacer, take a screw driver and pop out the seal, while not scoreing the case. clean out the bore. use a socket and tap the new seal in. put a little oil or blue loctite on the seal when you install it."
similar to the shift shaft seal replacement!
I'll be trying it this weekend! Fingers crossed for an easy fix!
just about all seals can be changed with motor in bike.
