So my second shifter crapped out on Saturday splines are shot. I'm not a fan of the aluminum shifter and steel shift shaft... Is anyone aware of a geometry correct or close to correct shifter replacement off another bike that's not aluminum? If need be I will be ordering a new oem shifter but if there's a steel shifter that will work I'd rather go that route... Thanks for any input.
You've already stripped two shifters? Damn lol. My hybrid has the same shifter from when it was a 250 lol. You could drill through the shifter and shaft, then put some type of connecting pin through it.
A banshee shifter will fit, it would just need to be cut to length.
My first shifter was almost shot when I got the bike is I replaced it with a used one that wasn't much better. I think a new oem shifter with new good splines will be fine instead of saving some money and buying used.
Depending how badly worn it is you can shave a tad off the edges of the slot so it pinches tighter before the ends touch.
Well I'd do that but the bolt hole is stripped from me trying to make it work to keep riding even though we were done for the day anyway lol. I ordered a new oem one but if anyone is aware of a steel shifter that will work let me know please. Thanks!
Run a bolt through it and put a nylon nut on it after you shave it. Man you must be hard on the shifter. I've had the same one on my 250 for 17 yrs and I'm sure it was the original when I bought it. That bike has. 100's of hrs on it
zilla is only a 5 speed it does not matter how hard you shift it you will not get another gear out of it.
do what matt said . put a longer blot and nut on the shifter. this will help lock it in place.
Dang, and all this time ive been yankin shifter to hit 6th lmao
Breaking shift shafts? Check your clutch plates & assembly. Shifter should click into gears with ease, especially if you're rolling.
The shift shaft isn't broken and the splines on it are fine. The used shifter I got when I finished my build last September the splines gave way. Probably had to do with the guy I got it from had to large of a bolt in it and it was stripped out and wouldn't torque down on the shift shaft. I've already got a new shifter being delivered today from Jason and the proper bolt coming tomorrow or Saturday. I will keep this shifter along with my other one that's splines are shot as well and do what you guys recommended to them and keep them in my box as backups.
the bolt just makes it have a stronger bite,
