Toe-in or Toe-out?
« on: August 24, 2015, 11:18:23 am »
What are your feelings of setting the toe on your quad?  I've seen statements where some like it toe-out.  Why?  does this make your quad more stable? or ?

Let us know what quad this is on and what your typical riding terrain is like.

I have always set my toe to toe-in about 1/4" or so on all my quads including the Zilla.  I only ride sand.

manual recommends 1.4-1.6" toe-in.

I did mine at the min.

Setting the toe-in at 1.4" as per the service manual accomodates the  factory bump steer.

I set my toe-in too 1/8" at static weight before the toe modification and took some measurements.

suspension fully uncompressed
2 2/3" Toe In

level a-arms to ground
1 1/8" Toe Out

suspension fully compressed
2 1/4" Toe In

So the worst part of my measured toe-out was 1.125" (1 1/8") toe-out.  Setting toe at 1.4" or about 1 3/8" lets the suspension go thru its full cycle, but never going toe-out.

This makes be believe that the factory wanted these quads to have toe-in all the time.... but we all know how the factory screwed up some things on the Zilla.

Found this in my note book from Joe Byrd's riding school:
Always toe in, never toe out. Use 1/4'' to 3/8'' of toe in when measured from outside of tyre to outside of tyre.

That's for motocross though and more specifically its for a trx450r
