I use my front brakes all the time in the dunes. IMO the only time saving the weight of the front brakes is only for pure drag bikes. Again IMO front brakes on a duner is a must have for rolling down dunes backwards, FAST stops, stoppies, idiots riding across the drag strip, etc....all that good stuff.
