thermostat
« on: April 23, 2014, 08:21:43 am »
I just finaly move into a ltr i was curious about the thermostat, i only ride in the spring and summer times i dont go riding when its cold very often, can i pull out the thermostat and still race the machine will it effect the way the quad runs, i dont want it to stick, it already gets very hot and has overhrated couple times, i know i need to do a head gasket already the coolant is pushing out and has pressure in the trans area also starting to push oil out the filter cap

It will just make the quad run a little cooler, since it will always have a constant flow of coolant.

If your thermostat is working properly, removing it will not make your engine run any cooler or better.  If your engine is running hot it is because enough air is not flowing THROUGH the radiator or the radiator is not full of coolant or you may have a head gasket leaking.

If the head gasket is leaking you can feel the water hoses plump up when you go to wide open throttle operation.  A leaking head gasket will usually cause coolant to blow out the radiator overflow even when the engine is still cold when you go to wide open throttle operation.

Make sure your fan on the radiator is working and keep your average speed in second gear or above.  Most engines will always overheat when riding in first gear and sometimes 2nd gear especially in the summer.  The LTR was made for racing and the radiator was not designed for low speed riding.

I have done some diggin on the head gasket, i believe it is blown on the timing chain side, that is why there is excessive pressure in the bottom end when i pull the clutch oil fill plug, and when i get on it it pushes coolant out, the fan is turning on and off fine and works good, was just curios if i removed the thermostat if it would effect the efi system to much, probly this weekend i will be doin the head gasket and get the head surface checked, the guy i got it from had his brother put new crank and piston and cyl on it when i got it i noticed that is got hot and no coolant so i filled it and it pushed out all over the place on the track but it can idle for 45 min and no coolant leak or pushed out just excessive pressure in the bottom like to much blow by

Yes check the top of the cylinder and head for small waves or dips.  Being recently rebuilt, it may be experiencing the same problem that we see frequently.

We have to machine a lot of heads and cylinders from engines blowing head gaskets that have been recently rebuilt.  The majority of these engines were done by a shop that was trying to "beat the flat rate clock" by using one the the gasket removers sold by Snap-On, Mac tools etc.  These gasket removers resemble a sanding disk made of scotch-bright and make the gasket surfaces look great to the naked eye but will make dips of a few thousands deep and destroy the metal surface's ability to seal against the head gasket.

Another problem is the gasket kits being sold on the internet and discount parts warehouses.  If you can buy a complete gasket kit for less than the cost of an OEM head gasket  you are probably going to have to do the top end twice and still have to spend the money for an OEM head gasket the second time to make it seal.
