...And is it an overall improvement to a stock taper bored carb. I have a chance to get a 44mm Lectron for a good price and hear they are easy to tune. Also hear they are more of a drag carb and might not do so well for trail riding. I currently have the stock K carb on my 87 and know most people prefer the 88 and up M carbs due to tunability.
Hoping to get some feedback from people who have tried both.
Lectrons suck for general purpose riding. Duning and drag there OK but you can really only get one throttle position perfect on a lectron. The 44 will make similar peak HP to a 42.5 tm or a 44 VM carb. The idea is its supposed to be a pressure sensitive carb and auto compensate , it doesn't work that well. Like any thing else some guys love em some hate em I don't care for them and don't use them any more.
Carl, what would you recommend me doing with a stock 87 model carb. Taper bore? Changing brand to 88 and up? Im looking for performance and have read (but not sure) that a bigger carb can squeeze out more hp.
The 87 carb can be modified to work as good as the 88+. As for carb selection, bored stock zilla carb for trails/racing/duner, mikuni vm44 for real high power duner/hillshooter/drag and lectron for hill shooting and drags only. I'm am not a fan of lectrons, they never seem to run consistantly across the rpm range. Mostly from a lack of multiple circuits to tune. It is the only carb availible over 44mm I believe.
Good info right there, thanks
Maybe bc 4 pokes are just more reliable
I run a lectron a 46mm lectron on my quadracer and its a general propose ATV. Dunes, desert trails, and hillshooting. I won't disagree that a mikuni is more adjustable. I see it as a set and forget. With the lectron u might have to set for different types of environments. Big difference is that i did not used an off the shelf lectron. I bought it set up for a harsh bumpy environment with a different bowl and floats.also added an adj power jet, adjust the main jet with your finger of u want. If u find one cheap and want to try, go for it. If u don't like it send your mikuni to get re worked and sell the lectron. Only u will know what u really like and what u don't. As stated earlier, most lectron carbs are used on higher hp quads for high speed/WOT use.
X2 on Iceracer's comments. Just got rid of a Lectron on my Dad's 500. It runs much better on the stock carb.
Biggest problem we had with the Lectron was lack of good throttle response. All better with the 88+ stock carb.
was the lectron the same size as the mikuni u replaced it for? stock or built engine?
We have already been through all this before in another thread. Not going to rehash it here.
I have a 48 lectron on my zilla and it seems real responsive. Its on a small reed zilla
im runing a 48 lectron i reworked the needle its just as responsive as the 42.5 i had on it but it was a pita to get it there
i cant remeber who cuts the costom needles for lectron but if any 1 is interested i can send mine to them to copy
my 46 is really responsive as well, doesn't make sense to me that a carburetor that is not responsive be the carb of choice for many drag racers. competitive drag racing is all about having a responsive engine and rider/driver.
I bought the fuel ratio tool.
It was awesome at WOT. It was the intermediate throttle settings that sucked. I am sure it is great for drags and hill shooting.
i started out with a 7-2 xl needle I set it for every throttle postion by filing it .I fryed 1 topend seting this up exactly the way i wanted it i can hold it at any throttle postion and then go to wide open with no stumble
i got it runing better or just as good as the 42.5 i had on it at all throttle postions
I'm happy for you! I fixed the problem I was having by slapping a Mikuni back on that bad boy.
i would have went back to but i sold the mikuni and with limted funds i was stuck at the time lol
