HRD Engine - Crankshaft modification(s)?
« on: January 20, 2016, 03:34:02 pm »
Well, I **** my reinforced cylinder and broke my case a few weeks ago.  You can see pictures in my build thread.

My question is, was/is part of the magical HRD formula to lightening the crankshaft with drilled holes?  During tear down this last weekend, I noticed that my crank has 4 1" holes drilled around the big end of the crank.  No pictures right now, but I should get some when I split the case.

Can anybody confirm this procedure?  Seems that if you lighten the crankshaft assembly, wouldn't there also be a procedure to lighten the countershaft balancer to keep the engines rotating mass 'smooth'?

Didn't Mike Steiner build your motor?

He usually does pretty good work from what I've heard.

Yes Mike built my bike back in 2010.  I've ran it quite hard for many years, so I in no way blame Mike for anything.  Mike did right by me for the time involved, effort and communication when he had my engine.  I was just curious if the holes drilled in the crank are a HRD 'Rx'.  I should soon know if a stock crank fully built Quadzilla runs smoother then mine over 4k or it it feels the same.

1" holes are not an HRD mod, sounds like a Stiener mod.. HRD is just trued/welded OEM in most cases.

Mike does not do bottom ends.

He sends them to Bob in Oregon.  aka RxHP

If the holes do not hurt the balance of the crank I would not worry about it.  The bottom line is does it vibrate more than a stock crank?  I have not seen where the holes are located as to whether it may affect the strength of the crank.  I personally believe these types of crank lighting modifications fall into the same category as machining the OD of the ignition flywheel to lighten it..............snake oil.

I also have the equipment to perform these types of mods but I try to keep them busy performing modifications that make noticeable gains.
