You need to watch the wear on the rod. 

You can measure the wear by pushing the rod against one lobe and then tipping the small end over.  Place a dial gauge indicator against the top of the small end and tip it over diagonally. 

When you get to .080 it's time to replace, replace it with OEM rod and big end parts.
