500 or 250? If it's a 500 a lot of us don't use the head mount to help prevent that.

sounds like your pulling the studs out of your top end. Don't do that! If you never want to have a blown head gasket ever again send head out to be o ringed and top end get either new studs or stud upgrade to 10mm.
The head stay is the mount on the top of the head that bolts the motor tithe frame. Delete that completely.

Delete the mount from the frame to the head. Basically don't use it.

Yes. Alot of guys dont use that upper motor mount. From the looks of it you pulled that head stud. common problem on the 87's. Torque specs for the head studs is 21ftlb. You will probably have to upgrade to the larger head studs that came on the later years. Welcome to owning a Zilla !

Yes. If you haven't done it before I would send it to one of the known builders on here. O ringing and head stud upgrade aren't expensive and it's well worth the money. You will never have a blown head gasket again!!

Who is a good builder and is it worth the money to put back into this bike

Is it worth the money? Thats something only you can decide if u want a quad to just ride and never have to tinker buy a 4 poke or a utility. If u want something diffrent or something that will pull ure arms off keep the 500 and do the upgrades that we all have done already to make our bikes reliable. Tbh the 500 can be one of the most reliable bike out there. I hammer the hell out of mine all summer beating up on 4 pokes and all I gotta do at the end of the year is replace the piston. Goodluck dont panic there is a pile of knowledge on this site...

Send the head off to Jerry (motorgeek) or carl (iceracer). Both guys are fairly active on the site. You likely pulled the threads due to over-tightening but it's ok if you have the larger studs installed. The o-ring mod and stud mod are both a must if you own an 87 top end. I know it's sucks when your bike is down, but everyone here has been there. Just know after a few mods and little cash, you'll have a beast of a ride. And reliable too. The last few trips i've taken to the dunes, aside from a few bolts that fell off, the guys with the 4pokes are breaking down while the zilla cranks 1-3 kicks every time.

How much is a motor build for one of these usually run ... I guess I got sold a bike that was a lie but I guess that's the name of the game told me it only has two hours on the motor guess not

Problem is it may only have 2 hrs on the motor but when its some fly by nighter putting the bike together then thats where the problems start. Call jerry hall explain ure situation and he will guide u down the best path. I have also heard iceracer does some damn nice work also.

1500 for a complete zilla aint really that bad. I paid 2500 for my first and it was a total p.o.s my 2nd was 1k p.o.s rust bucket sitting in a barn for 5 years bone stock never even rode it b4 I tore it into pieces. So it could be alot worse tbh lol

Don't freak out, a blown head gasket is normal for 87's. Your top end is likely fine. Just need to get that head tweaked.
