Flywheel touching stator on lighting coils
« on: September 29, 2017, 06:11:55 pm »
I have had a issue of my flywheel touching stator .... I have had same stator in bike for over a year without issue... I have started to have a issue of the tho g miss firing or breaking up on the big end of a dune race... changed stator and it still seems to hit flywheel changed flywheel still hits... I'm at a loss with this ... I'm down to trying another oem stator I have .... would bad bearings cause this? I have inserts and the motor was fresh last summer top to bottom .... I have tested and replaced all electrical parts and now noticed the stator flywheel contact ...
Thanks <1>

The most common causes of flywheel/stator contact are bad bearings, loose bearing pockets, bearings are loose on crank, crank that is not true, broken crank, coils on stator are loose and or have moved from there original location.

I did pull on flywheel and didn't feel any movement but I am positive the cylinder pressure is stronger than I can pull.... I did stick a oem flywheel on it and it cleared ... I'm also sprayed the stator side seal while running and didn't notice a change in idle ... but it is getting colder her in Michigan so might play it safe and pull it out .. prep another one for next summer
Thanks for the reply

I know the thread is a little old but your subject said flywheel touching lighting coils and you were having top end misfire problem. Might be 2 different problems since lighting coils are not in the ignition circuit. As far as contact with lighting coils, if the contact was the edge of coils (opposite side from engine) maybe the main insert install/machining moved center of crank slightly to the clutch side, or maybe flywheel rivets were not tight if it was welded which could move the magneto part of flywheel a little. Many of the posts are left where they are once the person fixes the problem and I can relate to that, "let's go riding".... but the dude wanting to ride but is broke thinks "dang.... wonder if that fixed it? I want to go riding!" Just a thought.

I called it quits for the season and pulled it apart ... I had a few small things I found and decided I should just go through it all now before it caused more damage ... the screw bosses in the stator plate were glued in plave from new and I replaced it with a oem I had sitting around solved that issue then found a pin hole in a weld done during the ear welding prior to my owning the cylinder fixed that also then went into the trans to straighten it out because it was auto shifting and false nuetrals and of course replacing all bearings and seals just because they had a couple hard seasons on them and that stuff is always cheaper then another set of cases ... there was a couple other questionable things that I bought brand new and had to warranty from a reputable company ... I can't afford to pay the insane amounts of money some guys are getting to do this type of work.. so I expect to have issues at times ...
