'87 Carb issues

• So I Have a stock '87 500 with a fresh top end. I Cleaned the carb out and it fired up.
  But now I can't get it to start reliably. While searching for the stock specs, it seems the '87 carb is just an unreliable POS. True? Should I get an 88+ or a PVK?

• In stock form, the 87 carb has a lot to be desired. But you can send it off to HPR to get fixed to better than new.

• Zilla's are a PITA to start when the jetting is off.

• one more thing you could check is the pickup gap on the stator also
