Aftermarket ext swingarms round carriers
« on: February 28, 2015, 01:35:57 pm »
Hey all, new here and 1st post, it seems all the aftermarket swingarms for the LT500 are round housing bearing carriers that use a Banshee dimension carrier, do the LT's carrier components diameter prevent machining a carrier for them, if not has anyone tried machining the oem carrier to fit the round housing. With the cost of longer A-arms, swingarm, 3 stage 4 Elka's, z400 spindles & YFZ calipers, SS brakelines etc the added cost of new ext axle + hubs, sprocket + rotor hubs etc is kicking my a$$. Thanks, Lee

There is one company that does make a swinger and carrier still that use the 500 axle and components called Fireball Racing they look to be a quality arm, maybe someone on here that has one can chime in.

you can buy a round carrier for a lt500. It uses all the stock components. im thinking lonestar? I had one in my old leagers arm. If I was you id get a arm for a banshee carrier. Best thing I ever did for my 500... Then go on ebay and buy a banshee axle assembly on the cheap...

Cunningham_821, you say the Banshee axle assembly was the best thing, is the Banshee assembly that much lighter? Did you change your swingarm at the same time? I'm trying to justify the added cost and I just put new 4x110 wheels and billet aluminum extended hubs on (helps a lot sidehilling the dunes). I'm a big believer in lowering rotating mass and unsprung weight. I tested Douglas blue vs red label wheels, both had the same tires, and raced the same 2 guys up Dumont comp, red label I had a couple bike lengths on them and the blue label I had 3 times that easily, and the difference between .125 & .190 and on the smaller wheel circle, that much weight off the tire is compounded by the large circle. And lower weight doesn't have the lower reliability/longevity issues as adding HP. An axle doesn't effect rotating mass much but it's still unsprung weight. any idea what the weight difference and length between the Banshee assembly and the LT's? Thanks for the info. Lee

There are a few companies that make the LT-500 round carrier. But if you are drag racing, definitely go with the Banshee size carrier housing and run an aluminum axle.

The LT is a dune quad, any drag racing will be fun and games. I was curious if the OEM carrier was large enough to turn it on a lathe for the round carrier housing, have 3 lathes so might as well ask. I can't be the 1st one that thought about this with a 28 year old quad.....  I live by the Q meister, with all the variants he has messed with he probably has an idea. Thanks for the info. Lee

Main reason to run banshee set-up is the large aftermarket. I replaced my swinger and went with an aluminum axle assembly. But on my stocker spare parts bike ill build a swinger and use a banshee axle hubs etc. I got fed up with trying to find 500 parts. U can buy a banshee blaster warrior axle sprockets etc. Everywhere **** u cpuld prob find one on the clearance rack of your local walmart lol

I'm not really sure how strong the factory cast aluminum carrier would be if it gets whittled down on a lathe. Plus the holes for the adjustment bolts would be a weak point. The Lonestar carriers as well as the other aftermarket carriers are billet pieces so they are quite a bit stronger.
Fwiw, the factory carrier is no longer available from any dealers so they are becoming a rare commodity. You can sell it for $35-50 or even more.

And the lonestar one isn't made anymore either, so you're down to a fireball one or like a JJ&A banshee carrier.

They used Lonestar, when I called about having one built for mine they would only do a banshee carrier because Lonestar quit making them.

Well that's a revolting development!
Fwiw, I run a JJ&A play axle on one of my bikes. I have not had any issues with it yet. And yes, I air it out once in a while.

I contacted Fireball, they will build a +4 round carrier 1 that uses OEM axle etc, powdercoated any color, everything for $750. I want to get the diameter measurement of the carrier to see if the OEM carrier has enough aluminum to turn down to fit the round carrier, probably not but who knows? Lee

We build custom swingarms for over 30 different models and will soon be offering Swingarms for all 3 LT250 models as well as the LT500 either with the round style carrier(450R axle conversion) or to use the Stock OEM carrier. In length from -2” to +14”. We have the LT500 swingarm to mock up but we cannot find a OEM carrier to finish the mock up for our jig. We are also looking for two models of the LT250 swingarm. We need the round style swingarm and the model with the wide linkage mount. Let us know what you have so we can start offering these models to this community.
Thanks

I have a stock 500 carrier laying around if you need.  I'm also in the market for a new extended round style swinger.  Like everyone has said, you cant get parts for the 500 rear end anymore and both my chain and brake rotors are wore out.
